Happy New Year! Ohio Governor Mike DeWhine vetoes the legislature’s anti-trans bill. A district judge for Idaho issues an injunction stopping the state’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors from taking effect. A judge in Alabama denies a request for an injunction which would prevent that state’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors from going into effect. In Florida, a Republican lawmaker introduces a bill to prohibit pride flags being flown or displayed on government property. The first openly transgender officer to serve in the British Armed Forces gets an MBE. Dave Chappelle just can’t keep anti transgender slurs out of his act. Tommy Dorfman is misgendered on a plane and is very angry about it. The Williams Institute finds that 13.9 million adults in the U.S. identify as LGBTQ—5.5% of the population. A new study by researchers from Johns Hopkins shows the regret rate among those who received gender-confirming surgery is less than 1%. Russian parents are kidnapping their own children, and sending them to conversion therapy. That’s just a taste of the news you will find in Trans News Now!

Happy holidays! This is TransTainment! Transgender people and stories in showbiz. Today Suzi Eddie izzard takes on all the roles in Hamlet. Alex Newell is named 2023 Breakthrough of the Year by TIME magazine. Charles Busch will star as Ibsen’s wife in a new play written by him titled Ibsen’s Ghost. Farrah Moan, a competitor on RuPaul’s Drag Race in season nine and in RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars season four, has come out to the world as transgender.
Mainstream Books with Trans Characters: Comic Romps
Return with us now to 1997 and the Book Chat column written by Elizabeth Parker. Ms. Parker devoted this column to what she called “comic romps”. These three books were written by mainstream authors and contain characters who crossdress for various reasons. Transgender stars sign an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to weigh in on the Tennessee and Kentucky bans on gender-affirming medical care. Ohio packs more oppression into one bill banning trans athletes and gender-affirming care in the state. Jennifer Finney Boylan is elected the new president of PEN America. Activists in California are attempting to put the “Protect Kids of California Act of 2024” on the ballot. As legislators keep creating anti trans laws RuPaul’s Drag Race premiers its 16th season next month. The governor of Wisconsin vetoes a bill that would have made gender-affirming care illegal. The DOJ sues Florida for violating the Affordable Care Act. Transgender women finish first and second in the Illinois State Cyclocross Championships. Montana passes a law declaring that sex is binary. Dr. Jeanne Hoff, the first openly trans psychiatrist to treat transgender patients, passes away. Trace Lysette receives a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award for her performance in Monica. Hunter Schafer to appear in a new horror video game called OD. An opera about Lilly Elbe is on the way. Alex Newell is named Breakthrough of the Year by TIME magazine. A court rules the British Parliament acted legally in blocking the Scottish government’s Gender Recognition Reform Bill. Trans Spirituality – Winter Holiday Special
Well, it’s that time of year again. The winter holiday season. Hanukkah started on December 7 this year. The new moon is December 12, and of course the solstice is December 21. Christmas, for those who observe it is December 25 and Kwanza begins December 26. We won’t have a solar/lunar darkness as we did a couple years ago, but it is still a very dark time of year.

With the actors strike and the writers strike concluded you might think that trans actors and actresses would be busy acting. Some of them might be but many are going to auditions, or doing the audition from home using a ring light and their iPhone. What’s new today? The lawsuit Zooey Zephyr filed over the Montana House of Representatives silencing her is dismissed. Twenty-one state attorneys general support trans students use of the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity. On the other hand, 18 state A.G.s oppose the Biden administration policy that places foster children with families that respect the child’s gender identity or sexual orientation. A trans girl student showered with her classmates in the girl’s locker room and four girls file a sexual harassment claim. A Florida high school principal is reassigned, along with his staff, because they let a transgender girl join the girl’s volleyball team. Senator Ted Cruz is one of the sponsors of a bill that would forbid federal agencies from punishing those who refuse to use a person’s correct name or pronouns. Doctor Who introduces trans actor Yasmin Finney as Rose Noble in the first of three specials celebrating the show’s 60th anniversary. A trans man moves to Canada to escape anti trans laws in Arizona only to find there are anti trans knuckleheads up north, too. Things are getting even more scary for transgender people in Russia. Nepal is the first country in Southeast Asia to legally recognize a same-sex marriage. Some middle-school students take to X to voice their displeasure with Moms 4 Liberty. Retro Rerun: Pervert Club
In 1995 an American manga artist named Will Allison created a manga comic titled Pervert Club. It’s the story of a male high school student who comes out to the whole school as a crossdresser. As an open crossdresser he is invited to join the Pervert Club, a small group of queer fellow students. Dov Sherman, the TGF contributor who wrote about manga and other things back in the ’90s reviewed Pervert Club in 1997. Today we pull her review out of the darkest depths of the TGF Archives.

A trans woman joins a women’s cricket team and two months later the Cricket Council bans trans women on women’s cricket teams. President Biden says no one should be discriminated against simply for being themselves. A survey says voters think that doctors should decide whether patients should get gender-affirming care, not politicians. Trans veterans threaten to sue the Department of Veteran Affairs over delays in gender-confirmation surgery. A Christian school is not allowed to compete in any sports over their refusal to play a team with a transgender player. Florida legislators introduce a bill to stop employees from sharing their pronouns. A new film titled The Dads features five fathers talking about their transgender children. Although the Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa proclaiming gender-affirming surgery okay the country doesn’t have the doctors, psychological and surgical, to provide care.
