Book Review: “To the Hilt” & “War Paint”
This Retro Rerun post from the TGForum Archives was the first in a series of reviews of books with transgender themes or characters. The reviewer was Elizabeth Parker and she started writing book reviews for TGF in 1997. In this post she reviews two books, one with what is surely a trans woman main character and the other that features a detective who adopts the guise of a woman to do his investigation. One such bill in Texas treats any attempt at helping a transgender child through gender-affirming care as child abuse and activates government forces to stop the “abuse”. Time for the news! First some election news. A trans woman in Kentucky is elected to the local school board. Montana welcomes the first transgender person to its state legislature. Nevada voters approve a referendum extending non-discrimination protections to gay people and the differently gendered. A trans man wins a seat in the New Hampshire state legislature. In the bad news department, several anti-trans governors held onto their seats. Lawmakers in Tennessee have a bill for their next session that would make drag shows illegal. Students in Arkansa walk out protesting the anti-trans school board’s decisions. A teenage trans woman wins a beauty in New Hampshire. Justin Trudeaus is the first world leader to appear as a special guest on RuPaul’s Drag Race in Canada. Nikita Dragun was arrested in Miami and sent to a jail for men.
