Back in 1998 TGForum contributor Leah MacLean wrote about returning from the Fall Harvest transgender gathering in Minneapolis. Her drive, done while still en femme and feeling good, took her through southern Minnesota as she cruised back to her home in Nebraska. Eventually she had to stop for fuel and a restroom break. The late Roberta Angela Dee wrote a number of articles for TGForum back in the 1990s with information on how to look, act and talk in a feminine manner. Her tricks and tips were alway well read on the site. Today we bring back an article from 1996 as our Retro Rerun. Roberta had five tricks to talking in not just the correct pitch but ways to learn how to enhance what you are saying with appropriate hand gestures. And she emphasizes the importance of laughter and smiling in feminine communication.
Back in the day, 1997 to be exact, TGForum would run product reviews by TGF readers. (We will do that today if you have any products you would like to let readers know about.) Our Retro Rerun today is from 1996. It is apropos since June is the “wedding month.” TGF contributor Coreen Clark wrote about the urge many crossdressers have to wear a wedding gown, or in some cases have the whole bridal experience. She admits to having tried on her wife’s wedding gown at least once or twice but she wonders what the real fascination is for some people. To investigate she conducted some research with cisgender women and asked several of her crossdresser friends why they were attracted to the idea. Back in 1997 one of TGForum’s contributors offered a solution for crossdressers who want to have beautiful nails for an evening out but can’t find press on nails that fit. Since young cisgender women with tiny fingers are the biggest market for press on nails what’s a crossdresser to do? Jayne Nicole enlisted the help of the nail techs training at her local beauty school and had them make custom acrylic nails she could save and apply with 3M double sided tape. She did not provide any photos or diagrams but she explains the process throughly. See if her technique could work for you.
Gianna Israel provided nationwide telephone consultation, individual and relationship counseling, and gender specialized evaluations and recommendations since 1988. She passed away on February 21, 2006 after a long illness. Her writings on gender issues had a significant impact on the field. TGForum published many of her columns in the 1990s. Back in the 1990s Dov Sherman wrote a column for TGForum on Japanese manga and anime. While much of the manga Dov reviewed is no longer available the runaway success of Ranma 1/2 has made it so popular around the world that the manga and anime are always available. Ranma is on interest to us because in the first adventure he falls into a cursed spring and it changes him into a girl. Hot water can change him back into a boy. Classic female impersonator Paul Lavern Cummings passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada in March of 2018 after being severely injured in an auto accident. In more of their adventures that you might think the boys were required by the plot, for comedic purposes of course, to get dolled up in drag. Today we bring back a post from our Archives by TGF member Zoe Zyzzyx that covers many of the instances of drag in the Rascal’s short films. Former TGForum contributor Bobbi Swan passed away last month. During her time as a contributor she wrote a column titled Maidhood. Her first foray into the world of maid dressing wasn’t about maids per se. Bobbi extolled the charms of the Car Hop. Those were the young women who took orders and delivered food and drinks to patrons of the drive-in restaurants that got popular after WW II. We suspect it was the Car Hop costume that drew Bobbi’s praise. Take a step back, both in the TGF Archives and into the post war world, with Bobbi Swan.
In 1996 JoAnn Roberts, one of our founders, reviewed a book titled The Man in The Red Velvet Dress. It was written by Justine Sahnjay under the name J.J. Allen. The book stirred controversy for a few things. Prime among the complaints was a broad definition of what made a crossdresser: “. . .any person who wears clothing of the opposite sex.” JoAnn found that objectionable along with a couple of other points but overall she felt. . . well, you’ll have to read her review and see.
