On November 3-5,2022, Elizabeth Marie attended Center Peace “A Place at the Table” conference in Dallas Texas. The conference. As a religious trans woman Elizabeth was happy to find a conference that might help her reconcile her faith with her feelings of womanhood. After she arrived she found that it wasn’t just the panels and seminars on religion and transgender issues. It was the wonderful people who were attending. Just meeting others who follow the teachings of Jesus but don’t confirm to what most religions expect was wonderful. She reports on the conference and offers other resources for those like her.
For this Retro Rerun we dive into the TGF Archives for 1999. Cindy Martin, the editor at the time, asked Roxy du Monde to write about what crossdressing is like for those who are not under 5′ 11″ in bare feet. Ms. du Monde was 6′ 2″ in her bare feet and with high heels could reach 6′ 6″ with ease. She may have some tips for the larger girls among us that are still good today.
Today’s Retro Rerun from the TGF Archives is from the 1990s. The general public had not evolved to more acceptance of crossdressers and trans women out and about in society. Passing to avoid ridicule was important to members of the developing trans community and contributors to TGForum had advice on how to go undetected while expressing femininity in public. The advice in this article by Carolyne Woodward is still good in the 21st century if your goal is to blend in. If some of it seems silly remember to view it in context.
When Cassandra Williamson’s father was dying Cassandra had not yet come out and was keeping any hint of her true self hidden from sight. She was a manly Marine Corp officer who had a reputation for doing what needed to be done, more like a machine than a person. She was used to tamping down her emotions when she interacted with others but in private her grief over her father’s condition spilled out. Cassandra shares the story of the day her father died.
This Retro Rerun post from the TGForum Archives was the first in a series of reviews of books with transgender themes or characters. The reviewer was Elizabeth Parker and she started writing book reviews for TGF in 1997. In this post she reviews two books, one with what is surely a trans woman main character and the other that features a detective who adopts the guise of a woman to do his investigation. Fantasia Fair is a conference, convergence, trans event that is a week-long held in Provincetown, Massachusetts every October. This year FanFair became TransWeek. The gathering on Cape Cod has been happening since 1975. Attendees have all week to be themselves and participate in planned and unplanned activities. There are speeches, dancing, whale watching and more to fill the week. Today Rhonda Williams reviews everything that happened if TransWeek 2022.
In 1998 TGF Contributor Leah Maclean wrote about her road trip into Omaha to meet some friends for crossdressed fun. That article is our Retro Rerun for today. For some reason Leah was feeling more confident on that trip and stopped several times to browse cosmetics counters looking for a certain color nail polish. Our Contributor Pauline Estelle learned of an incident that took place at a Canadian university in 2017. A university psychology professor was set to appear on a panel with three others to talk about political correctness. Due to the reputation of the professor as a conservative who is the antithesis of progressive thought the other panel members dropped out. The professor went on alone and was eventually shouted off the stage by the students. This got Pauline Estelle riled up. We agree that shouting someone off stage is not good, you also have to consider the reputation of the man they shouted down.

We are not sure why but in the southern states of the USA (mostly) beauty pageants featuring boys and young men dressed up as glamorous girls are popular events that raise money for charities. These are the same states were legislators keep introducing laws that are harmful to transgender people. Go figure. Here is another batch of photos of the best pageant girls.

Since the early days of TGF we have seen many, many photos of our subscribers. (Check out the TGF User’s Gallery.) Many of the photos do not display their subject in a flattering light. Usually due to lack of light, too much light behind the subject, or some other technical issue. Even when the subject has a pleasing pose problems with the lighting and background may ruin the photo. This Retro Rerun is from former TGF subscriber and contributor Julie Peters covering how to take better photos. Her advice was good in 1998 and still holds up.
We dove into the TGForum Archives today and pulled out this article from 1998. It’s called Best Mates and is by the significant other of a crossdresser in Australia. Colleen, the SO, became attracted to a fellow worker and over time their relationship grew into more than a friendship. At some point Colleen found out about her boyfriend’s other personality, Claire. She was open to meeting Claire but was shocked by this strange woman who had taken away her boyfriend. Claire almost led to a breakup but Colleen, after initially saying she couldn’t cope, found a way to keep them together.

In the 1990s TGForum had a regular feature called Manga Focus. Dove Sherman wrote about the plots of manga that included crossdressing or even shape shifting. This Retro Rerun is on a manga titled We Are Mint. A boy misses his twin sister when she goes off to school and he tries to enroll in the school too. When he learns that admissions for boys are closed he enrolls as his sister’s twin sister.
Back in the ‘90s some of TGF’s prettiest readers agreed to share their favorite style, beauty, and “how-to” tips in a feature called My Secret. This tip from 1999 tells you how to get a close shaves ll over, and it came from TGF subscriber Gina Mylano.
Back in 1998 a TGForum contributor Bobbi Williams wrote a piece on how to learn to walk confidently in high heels. It was titled If You Talk the Talk, Be Ready to Walk the Walk. Her advice from over 20 years ago holds up today. Get well made shoes that fit and then practice, practice, practice. No one likes to see a woman wobble her way down the street.
