Boystown in Chicago is one of the most country’s inclusive LGBTQ+ communities and the oldest officially recognized gay neighborhood in the country. It’s known for its welcoming vibe, nonstop nightlife, LGBTQ-owned businesses, and excellent dining options. Covid-19 put a damper on that nightlife and Julie Slowinski, a normally enthusiastic patron of the area’s offerings, was reluctant to return to her usual haunts over concerns about the lack of social distancing. The last chapter told us about the process of finding a gown for Savannah to wear to the big formal ball. She is to escorted by a boy she has been hanging out with casually and her dress, hair and makeup have to be perfect for the big night. She has been practicing walking in high heels, maneuvering with poise while managing a floor length skirt, and anticipating the big day. In this chapter she goes to a salon with many of the other girls who will be attending the ball and the big day arrives.

In the seventies and eighties men in makeup were far from the norm. Bands like T-Rex, Kiss or The New York Dolls used it to attract fans but other than showbiz examples only a few fashion designers promoted the idea of men wearing makeup. Mary, a lifelong crossdressing snowbird, lives six months of the year full time en femme in a 55+ deed restricted fun loving community in Florida. When family are coming to visit she rents a place in the Orlando area, ‘goes butch’ for a while and everyone has a good time. About 5 years ago a grandson came to visit and Mary learned he was interested in crossdressing. Now the grandson is visiting again and spending the time as Jazzy.
