Retro Rerun: Female Masks in Comic Books
In the 1990s Brittany Rose was TGForum’s comic book expert. She revealed the numerous times that male protagonists adopted female disguise (looking at you Jimmy Olsen) in or to defeat villains. And when male villains used female disguise as part of their nefarious plots to take over the world. Or at least steal a lot of money. This Retro Rerun is from June of 1998 and is about the amazing way that latex masks can completely transform a man into a beautiful woman. Key thing to know, they can’t. Except in the comic book world.
The Week In Trans 7/19/21
First up it’s all the news from the transgender community in a feature we call The Week In Trans! What’s going on? Mj Rodriguez is nominated for an Emmy. GLAAD finds that major motion pictures don’t have much, as in none, transgender representation. A new documentary looks at LGBTQ+ people who have survived hate crimes. A teacher fired for dead naming a student loses his lawsuit against the school. Legislators in Louisiana are determined to over ride the governor’s veto of the bill banning trans girls in sports. The Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference will be online this month. Alaska’s Medicaid program now covers transgender health needs. This past Wednesday was International Non-Binary Persons Day. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina are required to cover facial feminization surgery and voice therapy. Out has a list of 28 people who came out as non-binary this year. A trans woman from Nicaragua has been released from ICE custody after two years. Among new proposed emojis is one of a pregnant man. Many of us have been there. Sometimes to the point at which the attraction to feminine clothing interferes with our daily lives. Kandi Robbins has been there. Done that. Our Retro Rerun today is from March of 1999. It was written by TGForum subscriber Stephanie K. Thomas after Ms. Thomas attended her first major transgender event, Fall Harvest in Minneapolis in November of 1998. Stephanie learned a couple of things at that event. For one thing she found she loved to dance the night away as Stephanie, and two, she realized that all her life she had needed to know the gender of anyone she interacted with. After meeting a variety of gender and sexual identities at the Fall Harvest she decided to abandon that position.

Gavin Grimm has won his case, again, when the Supreme Court did not take it up. A trans woman in the new Miss Nevada. The U. S. State Department introduces a neutral gender marker on passports. The White House supports expanded rights for trans people. More movement on anti trans legislation continues. California is fixing the language in its laws to be gender neutral. Arkansa holds a 500 person Pride march. Pete Buttigieg tells viewers of The Late Show that trans rights are important. Pennsylvania makes it easier to do a name change. Furniture from the set of Pose is donated to a place for homeless trans youth. Spain is reforming its laws regarding trans people. Some other nations go in the opposite direction. Friends and What Happens After
Sophie Lynne lost a friend a few days ago, someone who was very active in her local support organization and was very comfortable relating to the world from a feminine place. But she was not out to her family, meaning a friend from the trans community had to go to her home and clean out all hints that a woman was living there. Sophie’s friend will be laid to rest as a male and her friends from the community won’t even know that name. Sophie writes about how that feels.

Emerging from the Chrysalis
Christy Lewis feels as if she has been enclosed in a chrysalis, slowly transforming into the beautiful butterfly she was meant to be, and now she has broken through the confining wall. Now she’s living her life as she always wanted, being “out” to all her friends and coworkers.

Summer ends and Savannah must “go home to Atlanta”. Kenny has to return from wherever he was and go to high school. Fred is away at a private school and Savannah’s sister is away at college. It’s not an exciting time for Savannah.

The Army and Navy have announced their plans to allow transgender people to serve. The V.A. is making gender confirmation surgery available to vets. States continue to introduce and pass laws restricting trans people in school sports and limiting medical care for trans kids. Several governors have said they will veto those bills if they land on their desks. The Department of Education will enforce Title IX to protect trans kids from discrimination. President Biden has designated the site of the Pulse nightclub as a national monument. The State Department has a Special Envoy for LGBTQ+ rights. Trans runner CeCe Telfer will not compete in the Olympics. A transgender woman is kayaking around Iceland against the current. Indya Moore stars in a new film. Hungary is so bad on civil rights for LGBTQ+ people that it may have to defend its high handed laws in court. There’s all that and more plus several TWIT Awards waiting for your perusal in TWIT!
