Trans News Now 1/22/24
One of the trans women who was denied a place on the ballot because she didn’t list her deadname may be included after all. The National Center for Transgender Equality and the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund will merge this summer. More than 500 bills were introduced last year which attacked LGBTQ rights, many of which were specifically aimed at the rights of transgender people. The South Carolina state House of Representatives has approved a ban on gender-affirming care for minors. The Missouri state legislature debated eight anti-transgender bills in one day. The Ohio governor’s proposed rules affect transgender adults as well as minors. Canada’s Drag Race crowned Venus, the first time a First Nations drag queen has won a Drag Race series. The Maine legislature is working to make the state more of a safe haven for families with transgender children. My Breast Implants, Part 2
Last week we published part 1 of Michelle Roger’s report on her experience with breast implants. She was tired of having to wear breast forms to fill out her bra. While they did get her occasional positive comments it was a hassle that she didn’t want to deal with anymore. After she transitioned to living fulltime as a woman she grew more focused on getting implants. Today we present part two of her quest for her own breasts.

A colonel is the U.S. Space Force is a trans woman. Opponents of transgender freedom continue to put forth laws that seek to restrict transgender rights. Some states that have already passed anti-trans laws have introduced further anti-trans laws to double down on oppression. In good news a Black transgender woman is the executive director of the Theatre Offensive, one of the nation’s oldest and most decorated queer hubs of performing arts. Gabbi Tuft will be the Saturday gala speaker at The Keystone Conference. Louisiana families with trans children file suit to prevent that state’s ban on gender-affirming medical care from going into effect. Another transgender woman was refused a spot on the ballot for the Ohio state legislature because she did not list her deadname on her nominating petitions. In Oklahoma, the only way a transgender student can get the gender marker changed on their permanent record is to get a court order. RuPaul’s Drag Race is back on MTV, and it is attracting more viewers than ever before. A short film titled An Avocado Pit that was written and directed by a trans man, starring a trans woman is on track to get an Academy Award. Trans News Now 1/8/24
A trans woman candidate for the Ohio legislature is disqualified because she failed to put her dead name on her nominating petition. Another trans woman challenges an incumbent Republican representative for her seat. Conservative legislatures have already filed or pre-filed 125 anti-transgender bills. A bill in Florida would require proof of “biological sex” before citizens could get a driver’s license or state ID card. Last week Governor Mike DeWine won praise from the trans community for vetoing an anti-trans bill. This week we take back our approval since DeWine has issued an executive order banning gender-affirming surgery for minors. A trans woman was arrested for DUI in 2021 and given a urine test. The results came back after four months and in that time the woman was fired from two jobs. The test results showed no sign of drugs or alcohol. Guess who is suing the city. Starting on January 1 major retailers in California must have a gender-neutral toy section. Texas Drag queen Brigitte Bandit gets a special gift from Dolly Parton. Boxing USA has a new guideline that requires transgender women to submit proof they have had gender reassignment surgery. Dave Chappelle keeps punching down on trans people but his Netflix specials aren’t making any money for the streamer. Yosha Iglesias will be the first transgender woman to earn the title of “women international master” if she is confirmed by The International Chess Federation. Today Dina Amberle serves up a seasonally appropriate stew that is guaranteed to warm you up. First ingredient is a news anchor who comes out as a lesbian on the air and gets many words of encouragement. Then Dina adds a liberal dose of ’60s fashion designer Mary Quant, seasons with a dose of red lipstick, and a dash of Japanese girl wrestling. Happy New Year! Ohio Governor Mike DeWhine vetoes the legislature’s anti-trans bill. A district judge for Idaho issues an injunction stopping the state’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors from taking effect. A judge in Alabama denies a request for an injunction which would prevent that state’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors from going into effect. In Florida, a Republican lawmaker introduces a bill to prohibit pride flags being flown or displayed on government property. The first openly transgender officer to serve in the British Armed Forces gets an MBE. Dave Chappelle just can’t keep anti transgender slurs out of his act. Tommy Dorfman is misgendered on a plane and is very angry about it. The Williams Institute finds that 13.9 million adults in the U.S. identify as LGBTQ—5.5% of the population. A new study by researchers from Johns Hopkins shows the regret rate among those who received gender-confirming surgery is less than 1%. Russian parents are kidnapping their own children, and sending them to conversion therapy. That’s just a taste of the news you will find in Trans News Now!

Happy holidays! This is TransTainment! Transgender people and stories in showbiz. Today Suzi Eddie izzard takes on all the roles in Hamlet. Alex Newell is named 2023 Breakthrough of the Year by TIME magazine. Charles Busch will star as Ibsen’s wife in a new play written by him titled Ibsen’s Ghost. Farrah Moan, a competitor on RuPaul’s Drag Race in season nine and in RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars season four, has come out to the world as transgender.
Mainstream Books with Trans Characters: Comic Romps
Return with us now to 1997 and the Book Chat column written by Elizabeth Parker. Ms. Parker devoted this column to what she called “comic romps”. These three books were written by mainstream authors and contain characters who crossdress for various reasons. The books reviewed are Cosi Fan Tutti by Michael Dibdin, Romanesque by Ralph McInery, and Maskqueraders by Georgette Heyer.
