When Drag in Cinema looked at the films of the 1990s we missed a few instances of men in drag. Among the Pedro Almodóvar’s ninth film High Heels. It was released in 1991 and featured a male actor portraying a judge who adopts a drag performer disguise as well as another male disguise. Then we take a look at Mixed Nuts, the 1994 remake of a French comedy that features Liev Schrieber in drag. 1996 brought us I Shot Andy Warhol with two male actors portraying Warhols superstars, and then in 1999 Willem Defoe does a scene in drag in the vigilante action pic Boondock Saints. Today’s Retro Rerun is by Brittany Rose. Her beat was crossdressing and transgender characters in comic books. This post covers two horror stories that feature crossdressing. In one story a master of disguise impersonates a female reporter. In the other story two men both dressed as Marilyn Monroe for a Halloween party. Britney’s Cartoon Corner featuring these comics was first published on TGForum in October of 1998.
The pandemic has messed up a lot of crossdresser’s plans for femme fun. With nightclubs and bars being closed, and for a time, department stores and other suppliers of femme finery limited to online ordering, it seemed that there was no fun to be had for the girls. But, people are adapting and shows are changing to reflect the new reality. Julie Slowinski and her friends got together for a drive-in drag show. Here is her report.
When last we read about Joe, aka Joseph Thomas, junior, he was sitting in a compartment on the Amtrak Autotrain heading north out of Florida. He had just spent two weeks in Florida attending his birth father’s funeral and helping Nora, his new-found stepmother, wrap up his father’s estate. Let’s back up a bit. Let’s back up to the days after the funeral service when Joe and Nora, his dad’s second wife, got busy winding up the estate and learning about each other.
The torturer with the chain saw has been broken and mangled yet still shows signs of life. As Natalie and Kay clutch each other in horror his true masters reveal themselves. Or is it “its” self? The destruction of their nemesis, rather than bringing an end to the horror seems to be unleashing a totally new evil upon them. It is revealed in Episode 44.
For Kay and Natalie their unwanted trip to some strange dimension has proven to be a series of shocks. Each one stranger than the last. Believing the creator of their misery was dead the women were horrified to learn that his broken and mashed up body still contained life. Once Kay got the bat in her hand she unleashed the rage, anger and pain over the things their kidnapper inflicted on them both and she beat his body till it was broken beyond recognition. But, the battered, mashed, practically pulverized corpse continued to chuckle madly. How could this be possible? Because of it being another dimension? Were the mysterious observers responsible? In the last episode Kay acted before the torturer could start his chain saw and picked up the bat that had mysteriously dropped into the savoring chamber. She used it to let loose the rage she had over how their tormentor had treated them. She used the bat mercilessly and hit, bashed, and broke his bones. Finally her rage had dissipated but she looked at what she had just done and wondered what she had become. Is it over now? Can Kay and Natalie escape the chamber and get back to their own dimension?
