Trans News Now 2/13/23

From across the nation and around the world, we bring you Trans News Now! Kim Petras and Sam Smith win a Grammy and scare conservatives. The president uses his State of the Union speech to call for Congress to pass the Equality Act. State legislatures are introducing and passing bills to deny trans people affirming medical care. Vermont passes a bill making their state a sanctuary for trans youth. 150 people in Oklahoma go to the state capital to protest a bill that would restrict access to gender-affirming care. Drag shows remain in the GOP’s sights. While anti-LGBTQ bills are introduced like never before over 90% of them don’t pass into law. Wendy Carlos won three Grammys long before Kim Petras won hers. D.C. Comics adds a transgender/nonbinary superhero. Ben Song on Quantum Leap leaps into the body of a trans athlete. Hungary passes a law that makes it impossible for transgender people to get legal recognition. A trans couple in India have the first baby born to a trans couple in that country. Former president Trump posts a video in which he vows to pass legislation banning gender affirming care for minors and another law recognizing only two genders if he is elected in 2024. Six anti-trans bills have died in committee in Missouri. Jen Richards is in the AMC series Mayfair Witches. The FBI investigates threats against drag shows and Drag Queen Story Time. 87% of LGBTQ teens report dissatisfaction with their bodies. World Athletics may be lowering the levels of testosterone allowed for competitors in women’s athletics. The Sims video game now allows binders and chest scars for transgender characters. Finland is set to allow legal change of gender without proof of sterilization. Childhood best friends get married after one of them has a gender change in adulthood. A trans woman is appointed to head the New Jersey Civil Rights Commission. The baker who won his court case over his refusal to bake a cake for a gay wedding just lost his case over refusing to bake a cake for a gender transition celebration. The trans woman who owns the Miss Universe pageant used the opportunity to talk to the worldwide audience about the pain she experienced in her childhood. More that 150 anti-LGBTQ bills have been proposed already this year, and it is still January. Florida Democrats are seeking to ban the gay and trans-panic legal defense. A new study finds that trans females do not have an advantage over cisgender women in sports. Kim Petras and Sam Smith will perform at the Grammy Awards. Mark Hammill tweets in support of human rights for all. A trans activist from Cameroon has been granted asylum in Belgium. The anti-trans laws passed in Texas have moved many families to move out of the state. Now the same thing is happening in Florida. That’s just a taste of the news. Victoria’s Secret named transgender actress Bell Agam as their brand envoy for Israel. WBC creates a new category for trans people to compete in. What’s new? We tell you in Trans New Now! The first transgender person elected to the Vermont state legislature, Taylor Small, was invited to the White House for the signing of the Respect for Marriage Act and her partner proposed while they were there. A 3-judge panel rules that trans athletes don’t ruin cisgender competitors chance to be champions. Ohio legislators say why have two anti-trans bills when they can be combined into just one. Other states continue with their misguided efforts to “protect” children. Non-binary Dept. of Energy employee Sam Brinton, who was caught stealing high priced luggage, did it again and is no longer with the Department. Texas A.G. Ken Paxton wanted a list of people who changed gender on their official IDs. He didn’t get it. Rather than listening to the American Academy of Pediatricians support for treatment for trans kids Marjorie Taylor Greene chided them for endorsing “genital mutilation” on kids — which does not happen. An Appeals Court tells North Carolina it can’t exclude trans care from its state health plan. A convicted murderer is scheduled to be the first known transgender person to be executed in the United States. The next season of RuPaul’s Drag Race is moving networks to MTV.
