The U.S. Supreme Court voted not to take up the case of a ban against transgender athletes on girls’ sports teams in West Virginia. This means that the Appeals Court ruling stands, and that means that the transgender females can play on girls sports teams in West Virginia. While it is too early to see if the Supreme Court will take the same attitude to other such bans, appeals courts will likely take notice of this. The Advocate has this story.

Courts will also notice that the U.S. Department of Education has a new interpretation of Title IX. It prohibits broad bans of transgender athletes in all sports in a state, but allows for more specific bans. This story comes from NPR.

The North Dakota legislature failed to override Governor Doug Burgum’s veto of legislation which would forbid teachers and others at schools from using pronouns and names not associated with what is on a student’s birth certificate. The Hill has this story.

Mar’Quis Jackson

Police in Philadelphia have arrested a suspect in the murder of trans man Mar’Quis Jackson last year. This story comes from The Advocate.

A federal judge in Tennessee not only blocked the ban on drag from taking effect, this week he extended the stay on the ban until May 26, after the trial begins on May 22. The Advocate has this story.

Of course, it’s not all good news. Governor Brad Little of Idaho just signed that state’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. This story comes from CBS News.

Governor Eric Holcomb of Indiana also signed into law a ban on gender-affirming care for minors in his state. Indiana did agree that the parents who would allow their children to get gender-affirming care were not committing “child abuse,” but now they say that the care itself should be illegal. As we mentioned last week, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly vetoed a ban on transgender athletes in the state, for the third time in as many years. This time, unlike the last two years, the legislature had the votes to override the governor’s veto. This story comes from CNN. Opponents of the bill say that it opens the door for genital exams of athletes.

In North Carolina, the defection of state Representative Tricia Cotham from the Democratic party gives the Republicans a supermajority, enough to override a veto. A number of new bills were filed as a result, according to Fox News, whose story is carried by Yahoo News.

In Montana, a new bill would redefine “sex” according to reproductive capacity. Does this mean that people who have had hysterectomies or orchiectomies are now considered non-binary? This story comes from Them.

The Florida state House of Representatives has passed a bill which extends its Parental Rights in Education. This bill defines sex as “an immutable biological trait,” and says that any use of a pronoun that does not correspond to biological sex is “false.” It also extends the ban on teaching of gender identity, sexual orientation, and race theory through grade 12, and some say even extends them through college. Three anti-transgender bills, addressing transgender athletes, access to gender-affirming care, and updating the birth certificates of minors, were quickly approved by the Texas state Senate this week. This story comes from Axios.

Transgender golfer Breanna Gill won the Australian Women’s Classic. Shortly after, some opponents of transgender athletes made the usual comments, and some even made death threats. This story comes from PinkNews has this story.

A federal judge in Texas ordered the return of books that were removed from public libraries because of objections to LGBTQ or racial themes. This story comes from CNN Wire.

The Ohio state Supreme Court heard a case this week regarding a transgender person wishing to change the sex listed on her birth certificate. Ohio has never specified a manner for changing the sex listed on a birth certificate, but some judges have assumed that they have the authority to order such an adjustment. While some states are passing more and more anti-transgender legislation, other states are declaring themselves to be places where transgender people can live. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared New Jersey to be a “safe haven” for transgender people, according to The New Jersey Monitor has this story.

In an election to the state Supreme Court in Wisconsin, the Republicans tried to use transgender rights as a defining issue. Their candidate lost, though votes are still being counted. The 19th reports that transgender students and parents talked to the U.S. Department of Education about their fears concerning anti-transgender legislation.

Most Americans oppose anti-transgender legislation. However, the same poll shows that support for anti-transgender legislation is growing. LGBTQ Nation has this story.

Twitter may be restricting the reach of tweets that use LGBTQ key words, including “trans.” It has gotten to the point where some suggest replacing “trans” with “tr@ns,” according to The Advocate.

Hari Neff as Barbie.

Hari Nef plays one of the Barbies in the upcoming Barbie movie. (Yes, there are multiple Barbies, and multiple Kens.) She pleaded to get a change in the shooting schedule, so that she could fit the movie in without having to cancel another commitment. She released a part of her letter this week. The Department of Health and Human Services released a new study, which shows the many benefits of affirming LGBTQ identity.

Some states have been banning transgender athletes, World Athletics is placing severe limitations on those who had a “male puberty,” while the Biden administration has given them some support. Which side does science think is right? An article in Science magazine suggests that there is not enough evidence to make a judgment.

An all-transgender football (soccer) team took the field. They lost, 8-1, but made history with a team made entirely of transgender masculine players. PinkNews has this story.

Another upcoming movie, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, released its first trailer ahead of its summer release in theaters. Some people noticed in the trailer the appearance of a poster which reads, “Protect Trans Kids.” The Advocate has this story.

The movie Joyland has begun its limited release in the U.S. It will be released more widely over time. It tells a tragic story of a transgender woman and a married couple in Lahore, Pakistan. The movie has had difficulty in getting out, as CNN Wire describes.

At the CMT Music Awards in Nashville, country music star Kelsea Ballerini brought four drag queens to help her sing If You Go Down, I’m Goin’ Down Too. LGBTQ Nation has this story.

Young Bella.

On Transgender Day of Visibility, nonbinary actress Bella Ramsey posted a picture of them as a child. They wrote, “I didn’t know the word non-binary in this picture. But I knew what it meant. Inherently. Because I always was, and always will be.” Seventeen has this story.

We told you previously that Yasmin Finney and Pete MacHale had been cast in the upcoming season of Doctor Who. Both of those actors are trans. Now, we find that Jinks Monsoon will be in the cast as well. This story comes from Them.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission of Great Britain tried to announce it was celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility a few days after it recommended amending the Equality Act to define “sex” as equivalent to “biological sex” for the purposes of single-sex spaces. The move drew well-deserved criticism, as PinkNews reorts.

A bill introduced in the U.S. House of Commons by George Santos would reduce U.S. aid to countries which discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, but he seems to be fine with discrimination on the basis of gender identity. The Advocate has this story.

Social media stars Mercury Stardust and Jory raised two million dollars for transgender charities on Transgender Day of Visibility. They held a marathon video session on TikTok to raise the money, and they got some results. This story comes from PinkNews.
