Twit Awards for the Week 5/29/23
As we mentioned in the news, Target moved its Pride collection to a less-conspicuous spot in the stores, and removed some items, after complaints from some conservative groups. One of the complaints was that the collection included a swimsuit for transgender children, to hide their gender. A check at the Target web site showed that the swimsuit was available in adult sizes not child sizes. Conservatives who repeated this lie without checking get a Twit Award. The Associated Press did fact-check this.
In a recent statement, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that “children belong to us,” a new version of the idea that “it takes a whole village to raise a child.” U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert tweeted that children belong to their parents. It was a statement of the idea that parents are responsible for raising their children. Some on Twitter found this interesting, in light of recent legislation passed in some Republican states to tell parents how they can raise their transgender children. For extolling parents’ rights while taking away the right to give a transgender child the medical treatment recommended by the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychological Association, and other groups, Lauren Boebert gets a Twit Award. Nebraska state Senator Christy Armendariz gave an interview to New York Magazine, in which she admitted that she does not subscribe to a newspaper, and does not watch much news. Nonetheless, she got all concerned about the presence of transgender people within the community. She was one of those who wanted to end the filibuster and vote for the bill to ban gender-affirming care for minors. She also admitted that she did not listen much to the experts who testified. For voting on emotion and misinformation, state Senator Christy Armendariz gets a Twit Award. LGBTQ Nation has this story.
Illinois state Senator Neil Anderson is opposed to a bill which would allow a business to build all-gender restrooms that can accommodate multiple users. He made a comment that he would “beat the living p—” out of any “guy” who came into a restroom where his daughter is present. For starters, there would be stalls to provide privacy. Secondly, there also would usually be the choice of a single-sex restroom as well, so that there is an option for those who might be afraid that their presence in a single-sex restroom could cause a problem. Thirdly, a quick call to violence is not a good solution to anything. For defying logic, and for calling for a quick use of violence to solve a problem which is not yet a problem, state Senator Neil Anderson gets a Twit Award. This story comes from The Advocate.
