The states of Kentucky and Tennessee were going to have bans on gender-affirming care go into effect soon, but federal judges have delayed the implementation of those bans. These rulings are in response to pre-trial motions, and indicate that these judges think the bans are likely unconstitutional. The Associated Press has this story.

Georgia has passed its ban on gender-affirming care for minors. WABE public radio reports that four families with transgender children are suing to overturn the ban on gender-affirming care.
A new law in Kansas, which forbids the state from updating birth certificates, took effect on July 1. Governor Laura Kelly has issued a directive to state agencies, instructing them to continue updating the gender marker on driver’s licenses and ID cards. This story comes from KCTV-TV.

A federal judge in Montana is holding the state Health Department in contempt for not following its procedures to change the gender marker on birth certificates. Two years ago, the state legislature passed and the governor signed into law a bill which forbids the Health Department from updating the gender marker on birth certificates unless the applicant presents letters proving they had gender-confirmation surgery, but Judge Michael Moses ruled that law to be unconstitutional. Judge Moses now says that the Department of Health is in contempt for its “flagrant disregard” of his ruling. ABC News has this story.
A federal judge in Tennessee ruled against a group of transgender litigants, who were suing to overturn the state’s ban on updating the sex marker on birth certificates. Judge Eli Richardson ruled that, while the term “sex” may have different definitions, on a birth certificate it specifically refers to external genitalia at the time of birth. Channell Perez Ortiz
Channell Perez Ortiz, a 29-year-old trans woman, was shot to death in Carolina, Puerto Rico. She is the thirteenth identified transgender woman murdered in the U.S. this year, according to Them.
A professor and two students were stabbed when a stranger with a knife interrupted a gender-studies class. Geovanny Villalba-Aleman has been arrested for the attack, which took place at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. The CBC has this story.

In Mexico, a new law allows transgender people to change the gender marker on their ID cards or driver’s licenses. The Advocate reports that many rushed to change their gender markers the first day that the law went into effect.
A study from Denmark, which uses four decades of data, shows that indeed, transgender people are at higher risk of suicide. Transgender people attempted suicide at a rate 7.7 times as high as that for cisgender people, and as a result, they have a lower life expectancy than the general population.
