The Census Bureau dropped a gender identity question. “Transparent” wins GLAAD’s Outstanding Comedy Series award. An 11-year-old trans kid walks the runway in a children’s fashion show. It’s all the trans-related news from around the world! It’s The Week In Trans! Today we learn that Carmen Carrera explores the Brazilian trans community for a travel show. Guyana has a law against crossdressing left over from its colonial days. The ‘free speech bus” is oppressive — and vandalized. A boy in Pennsylvania is suing because he had to use the restroom with a trans boy. Poor thing. Say the magic words, “Julie Andrews”! She’s got a kids show featuring a non-binary character. Lady Gaga impersonates herself on RuPaul’s Drag Race. A few stories about North Carolina’s refusal to give up HB2. Alpha Chi Omega sorority is accepting trans women. Drag shows in Texas, silicone pumping gone wrong, and a whole lot more is waiting for you in TWIT!
The Occasional Woman
Some members of the trans community, especially on the crossdressing end of the spectrum, love to dress sexy, or some would say slutty. That causes a bit of conflict with those who feel all trans folk should blend in with other ladies of their age in their surroundings. To be tastefully dressed and attractive as a woman is what they feel the goal to be. Today The Occasional Woman looks at the fashion mistakes a girl can make and cautions against them. This is not to say that you shouldn’t ever wear that extreme mini with those ten inch platform pumps. Just think a bit about the impression you intend to make on your audience. If you’re hoping to hear “Look at that sexy slut” then go for it. If you want advice on being sultry while sedate give this post a read.
Will she be remembered?
Due to the nature of the trans/crossdressing community over the past few decades people often don’t learn that a friend from their crossdressing life has passed away — one day they stop seeing their friend at the usual places, the local TG-friendly club, or at the annual crossdresser weekend getaway. Many in the community separate their two lives and never reveal their male self to their female self’s friends. Today Cate O’Malley talks about a trans friend who passed away. Cate was fortunate to learn of her passing and attended the funeral — only to find a strange man’s body in the casket.

Fighting Back in New Jersey

Several bill passed in the legislature recently but Governor Christie is unlikely to sign them. Trans people in the state are organizing and stepping up to demand that their rights be protected. The Steak and Catfish Barn may just be discriminating against trans people. A trans man runs for NYC Council. A Japanese trans man is the first to win elected office in his country. San Francisco won’t pay for employees to go to South Dakota. A trans woman runner is sentenced for attacking a racing official. TGForum contributor Sophie Lynne found herself, unprepared, behind a podium giving testimony to her town’s borough council about an LGBT equality statute the council was preparing to vote on. Moved to speak when the floor was opened for public comment Sophie put up her hand, was acknowledeged, and went to the podium. What she said proved to be quotable and showed up in the local papers, along with her photo taken as she spoke. The statute passed. But Sophie feels many people who have been symbols for the fight for trans rights haven’t gotten the recognition they deserve. Today she writes about those Symbols.

Today Was a Good Day
California is a big state and there are parts of it, like San Francisco, that sound like the perfect place to be for a trans person. The city itself has benefits for trans employees, there is a tolerant attitude toward trans people and anti-discrimination laws to protect trans people’s rights. But it’s also expensive to live there these days. Our Amanda has been living 50 miles east of the city and out her way things are not so great. On St. Patrick’s Day she decided to take a ride in her new car and for once she experienced a good day. She took some photos to show why it was so good for her soul.
Every Camel Has Its Straw
Those in the trans community who live a “double life” having a male identity with male friends and associated and their other female identity with her friends can often find themselves in an awkward place when their male self is having a conversation with someone who knows nothing about the other life and begins to make biased and ignorant statements regarding “trannies.” Our contributor Proja Braga had a situation like that and she writes about the final straw.
