Comic books in the ’40s thru the ’60s would now and then see the hero disguised as a woman to catch the villain, or the villain disguised as a woman to beat the hero. Brittany Rose covered the comics crossdressing scene back in the 1990s. In this post we reach back into the TGF Archives to rerun her review of a few instances between 1943 and ’46 that saw Batman, Rovin, Catwoman, and The Joker in drag. Click on the comic to see a larger view.
In the 1990s Elizabeth Parker was TGForum’s book reviewer. Books that featured crossdressing, body swapping, etc. were her beat. Reaching back into the TGF archives we’ve brought back one of her columns with reviews of two books aimed at young people, The Boys in The Band, in which two boys pretend to be girls to join an all-female band, and book two, Help! I’m Trapped In My Sister’s Body.
In the late 1990s Elizabeth Parker wrote Book Chat for TGForum. She reviewed books in the mainstream that contained transgender or crossdressing characters. Right wing evangelicals are busy working to bring their idea of a Christian theocracy in our country to life. They want to impose their religious beliefs on everyone in the USA. The First Amendment of the Constitution says that “. . .Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. . .”. Religion is not supposed to have control of our government yet the right wing evangelicals in the GOP who have been elected or appointed to Congress, state legislatures, and the judiciary, are working to make all of our citizens comply with their beliefs. It’s not a new movement either. This Retro Rerun, written in 1998 by TGF contributor Judy Osborne, tells us that the right wing theocrats were busy at the end of the 20th century working to realize their vision.

Books that featured crossdressing, whether as disguise or just because the character liked doing it, that was her favorite type of book to review. In 1995 an American manga artist named Will Allison created a manga comic titled Pervert Club. It’s the story of a male high school student who comes out to the whole school as a crossdresser. Dov Sherman, the TGF contributor who wrote about manga and other things back in the ’90s reviewed Pervert Club in 1997. Today we pull her review out of the darkest depths of the TGF Archives.

When crossdressers first meet others like themselves and start comparing notes they find many have had the same experiences. In spite of their differences they are very much like the others around them. Ihen crossdressers first meet others like themselves and start comparing notes, so to speak, they find that many have had the same experiences. They begin to realize that in spite of their differences they are very much like the others around them. It should come as no surprise that the wives and partners of crossdressers, when they compare notes, should find themselves sharing many of the same experiences also.

A cisgender woman and LGBTQ ally writes to TGForum over her concerns that passage of anti-trans laws means anyone, no matter their political affiliation, sexuality or gender identity, could conceivably become targeted by the right over the slightest hint that they may have dressed up for a part in a play or skit. She tells the story of a Republican legislator in her state who voted against an anti-trans bill who is being attacked because he dressed in comedy drag for a TV commercial for his business.
