A dozen U.S. states with Democrats as state attorneys general have filed a law suit over the cancelling of Department of Health and Human Services grants to states that allow transgender minors to receive gender-affirming care. They claim that only Congress can put conditions on receiving this grant money. Reuters has this story.
This week, the Supreme Court listened to oral arguments regarding state bans on transgender athletes. From the tone of the questions by the justices, it seems that they are willing to uphold the bans, according to Mother Jones.
Politico points out that some justices seem to be willing to allow individual states to have bans on transgender athletes, so long as other states can and do permit transgender athletes to compete. The problem with this is that President Trump wants a national ban on transgender athletes, saying it is their interpretation of Title IX.
The Trump administration is not waiting for the Supreme Court to act. They are investigating the states of Washington and California, among others, to find alleged violations of their interpretation of Title IX. Erin Reed has this story at Erin In The Morning.
The Missouri State Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the state has the right to exclude gender-affirming care from the medical services covered by Medicaid. The court reached this decision despite all major medical organizations finding that gender-affirming care produces the best results of any treatment method for gender dysphoria. Riky Gervais won a Golden Globe for Best Standup Comedy on Television. Since he did not attend the ceremony, presenter Wanda Sykes accepted the award for him. She said that Mr. Gervais “would like to thank God and the trans community” for his award. Mr. Gervais is quite vocal about being an atheist, and he has dehumanized transgender people with his jokes. Three top transgender health agencies have expressed concerns about the upcoming puberty blocker trial, saying that they feel the trial violates “internationally recognized ethical standards.” PinkNews has this story.
A Russian court recently gave a transgender woman a five-year suspended sentence for nude photographs. The regional court has ruled on appeal that the sentence was too lenient, and sent the case back to the lower court, demanding that the transgender woman be given prison time in a mens jail. The Human Rights Campaign released its Annual LGBTQ+ Community Survey. It shows that nearly half of LGBTQ+ people are at least somewhat less public about their sexual orientation or gender identity in the last year. The obvious blame goes to President Trump and his administration. However, in their reports on President Trump’s first year in office and their report looking forward to the midterm elections, they stress that they will keep pressure on the administration, to counter their tendencies to punish LGBTQ+, and especially transgender, people.
