It was a bad week for gender-affirming care for minors. The U.S. House of Representatives voted to block funding for Medicaid to cover gender-affirming medical care for minors, even in states where the law specifically allows for Medicaid to cover gender-affirming care for minors. Later that day, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to a bill specifically making it illegal for doctors to provide gender-affirming care to minors. The bill was sponsored by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. Three Democrats joined the Republicans voting for the bill, while four Republicans joined Democrats who voted against the bill. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Dr. Mehmet Oz announced that the Department of Health and Human Services was essentially making gender-affirming care illegal for minors, even in states where the law specifically says that gender-affirming care for minors is legal. Politico notes that these measures to oppose gender-affirming care for minors come as the Republican majority in Congress are under pressure to not let the Affordable Care Act subsidies expire. It is feared that many people will be unable to afford health care without subsidies provided by the ACA.

Sutter Health, the largest healthcare provider in Northern California, announced that it has decided to continue offering gender-affirming medical care for minors. Sutter Health had announced that it was going to end that program. The Advocate has this story.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered the F.B.I. to give out cash bonuses to citizens who turn in “domestic terrorist organizations.” Among the “domestic terrorist organizations” are those who advocate for “radical gender ideology,” which sounds a lot like organizations which believe in transgender rights. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the formation of a “tip line” for people to report transgender citizens who were using the restroom in violation of the state’s new law on which restroom a transgender person may use. The Texas Tribune has this story.
The state of Texas is assembling a list of transgender people in the state. They are using a list of people who requested a change of the gender marker for the driver’s licenses as a starting point. This story comes from KUT public radio.
The Food and Drug Administration this week sent letters to the manufacturers of chest binders, claiming that they have “misbranded” their medical devices. The FDA claims that the chest binders are class 1 medical devices, and are subject to regulation as such. The Advocate has this story.
NHS England says it has no record of the total number of transgender people in the country. Granted, its number would be inaccurate, as it would not include transgender people who do not seek a medical transition, nor would it include transgender people who use a do-it-yourself method for hormones and seek surgery abroad. In New Zealand, the High Court said that puberty blockers are largely safe and reversible. This is contrary to what the right-wing government says. The High Court has ruled that the government cannot enforce its ban on puberty blockers, as it is likely not based on fact. Erin In The Morning has this story.
