The state of Maine has filed a lawsuit challenging President Trump after he targeted the state in his quest to keep transgender athletes from competing on girls’ and women’s sports teams. President Trump had the Department of Agriculture stop some funding for school lunches in Maine. Reuters has this story.
The Department of Justice is also withholding “non-essential” funding for prisons in Maine, citing the same lack of a law forbidding transgender athletes on girls’ and women’s sport teams. This story comes from The Advocate.
Outsports reports that the Department of Education and the Justice Department have formed a group to investigate the “staggering volume” of complaints about transgender athletes. The volume of complaints may be large, but the number transgender athletes competing in girls’ and women’s sports is not that big.
Ervianna Johnson, known as “Baydee” among friends, was a Black transgender woman. She was found dead near her home in North Carolina on February 19. She was last known alive on February 13. The Advocate report that police are investigating her death as a homicide.
Kaitoria Bankz was a Black transgender woman who was shot to death on March 31–Transgender Day of Visibility. Police have arrested two suspects who may have killed her as part of an attempted carjacking, according to LGBTQ Nation.
Melissa Calhoun as fired from her job as a teacher in Florida because she used a student’s preferred name. She is believed to be the first teacher fired for using a student’s preferred name. The Advocate has this story.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed the Restoration of Freedom Act, which is actually a religious rights bill. It allows people to discriminate against others on the basis of their “deeply-held religious beliefs.” This story comes from The Advocate.
In Ohio, Republicans are trying to include an amendment recognizing only two genders based on “biology” as part of the state budget. The Advocate has this story.
Republicans in the Montana state House of Representatives introduced a bill which would allow patients to sue their doctors if the experienced “any injury, including physical, psychological, emotional, or physiological harms” as a result of undergoing gender-affirming surgery or HRT for gender dysphoria. They are trying to scare doctors into not dispensing gender-affirming medical care, but doctors tend to know that the regret rate is very low. The bill was amended to limit the conditions under which a patient could sue. This story comes from KTVH-TV News.
Also in Montana, a bill which would charge parents with felony child endangerment if they sought gender-affirming medical care for their child under age 18 was brought up for a vote. It failed. Erin Reed has this story.
Reports of hate crimes against LGBTQ people have increased in frequency in Los Angeles County, according to The Advocate.
The Hilll reports that Jo Ellis, the helicopter pilot who was falsely reported to have caused a plane crash in January, is suing a right-wing commentator who has made the allegation that she was responsible for the crash.
It is now one year since NHS England put severe restrictions on the prescribing of puberty blockers. In the ensuing year, no new prescriptions have been written, reports PinkNews.
A transgender politician in Norway has recommended that transgender Americans be granted asylum in Norway. PinkNews has this story.
Thailand held its annual conscription lottery this week. All males who are 21 years of age are eligible, and those who are drafted serve for two years. Females are exempt, and so are transgender women, who are required to go to their recruitment centre to see the lottery, at which time they can present evidence of their current gender status. Elisa Rae Shupe, the first person to be legally declared to be non-binary, has died. She later felt that she had been used by others for political reasons, both those who claimed her falsely and those who denounced her. Her story can be found in Them, which quotes friends using female pronouns to describe Elisa.
Back in February, the University of Cincinnati put up signs on its restrooms which identified them as being for “biological men” or “biological women.” Those signs came down this week, according to The Advocate, at a cost of $16,000, including both materials and labour.
