EmmaNov0100.JPGThe Academy has announced the nominations for the best in the film industry this week, so it’s time to look at the best transgendered films.

Here are the ones I’d hand out:

Best Costumes: Priscilla: Queen of the Desert.  One word: Gorgeous!  One more: Outrageous!  But still gorgeous.

Best Musical: Hedwig and the Angry Inch.  (I know, a lot of people prefer Rocky Horror…)

Best Documentary: Southern Comfort, Director: Kate Davis.

Best Made of TV Movie: A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story.

Best Supporting Actor: Harold Perrineau, as Monica Jones in Woman on Top.

Best Actor: Johnny Depp, Ed Wood.  In the scene where Ed comes out to his new girlfriend in the spook house, Depp perfectly captured that nervousness of revealing the Big Secret.

Best Picture: Boys Don’t Cry.  This movie brought the concept of transgenderism to the national consciousness.  Sure, people knew we were out there, but until the story of Brandon Teena was presented, we weren’t really looked at as real people, with real challenges.
