Why pay retail?

If you’re not already in the know, let me let you in to one of the greatest secrets one t-girl can tell another: You don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for your wardrobe.

You can if you want.  If you’re made of money, and you simply must have the latest fashions, go right ahead and spend.

But if you’re like me, you want to make your dollar go as far as it can.   So, I look for discount stores.  No, not K-Mart, or Goodwill.  (Although there’s nothing wrong with them either.)  I look for stores that sell overstock, and slightly damaged stuff the big boys can’t get rid of.

There was a place in Omaha, when I lived there, call Name Brand Clothing.  Twice a week, they got a shipment of stuff from places like Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Brandeis, May’s, and Penney’s.   Sure, I had to search, but for under $20, I could come away with 2-3 tops, a skirt and a dress.  (I think Name Brand Clothing has gone out of business, as I can’t find them on the WWW.)

But, I have found something similiar: Gabriel Brothers.  (Right now, they’re only in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.)  And I found some great bargains: my new favorite blouse was only $4!  I got a pair of kinky boots for $6.  (I’ll post pictures sometime soon.)

Now, I’ve heard people sing the praises of Ross Dress for Less stores, but I’ve never been to one, so I can’t chime in.  (I am aware they’re often referred to as Crossdress for Less stores too.)

I’ve looked in Big Lots stores, but I gotta tell you, the only locations I’ve been in have had miniscule clothing selections.

Are there other regional discount stores that we should all know about?  Is Name Brand Clothing still in business?

  1. Trish says:

The only thing about Ross is, the stores are a MESS. You have to practically wade through anything to find what you want, if anything. And be sure to visit the glassware section. Everything you might want is broken.

    They have great boxes though.

  2. Not only does Ross Dress For Less have great prices and great clothes to select from, thay also have an additional 10% discount on Tuesday Senior’s Day, at least that’s what I hear from my older friends….grinnnn.

Also, there is a new store that is even less than WalMart, Steve and Barry’s http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_15/b3979091.htm
