This is the 25th year of this venerable event and there was concern that moving it from Atlanta to Florida would change the tone of the conference. The Southern Comfort Conference is coming! Their Communications Director Stephanie Schumaker reached out to us and provided some information on what’s in store for those who attend the conference at its new location in Weston, Florida. Every year around this time our own Sophie Lynne treks to central Pennsylvania for something of a spiritual retreat. She’s been doing it for the past seven years. Her destination is Harrisburg and her goal is to mix and mingle with her trans sisters and brothers at the Keystone Conference. This year was no different and Sophie was there and filed this report.

The Southern Comfort Conference, traditionally conducted in Atlanta, Ga. has decided to move further south to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for their 25th anniversary. As we did last year we will bring you reports on the conference throughout the year. This year we welcome Zelda Rose, Director of Communications for the SCC with her reports.

With the advent of online connectivity we have seen the decline and disappearance of support groups for TGs. With the ability to network online (on sites like TGF) TGs can meet people, chat, discuss trans issues and exchange makeup tips. Does this mean that the in person transgender support group meeting is the dinosaur of the 21st century? And what about TG conventions? Many of those have disappeared, too. Get Dana Bevan’s take.

Sophie Lynne made it to the Southern Comfort Conference this month and for her it was “living the dream.” SCC was on her agenda for a few years but something always stood in the way. This year it was SCC or bust. Today Sophie covers her experience at the conference. She attended seminars and talks. Ate hotel food. There was karaoke and too many cocktails. The lady in charge at the Southern Comfort Conference, Alexis Dee, has sent TGF a report on how it all went this year. According to Alexis over 800 people attended this year and a good time was had by all — from the “Princess Day” on Wednesday through the luncheons, dinners, karaoke and many programs to the Casino Night, trip to a local club and the special guests, it was all good. The Southern Comfort Conference has always been about encouraging growth and new experiences for the CDs, TG’s, TSs, FtMs and all the other alphabet soup of members in our varied community. Many a t-girl has taken her first steps out to restaurants, nightclubs or shopping while attending the four-day conference in Atlanta. Eleven SCC attendees invaded the sometimes macho world of sports and came away smiling.
