The 25th Annual Southern Comfort Conference was held this weekend at the Bonaventure Resort and Spa in Weston, FL, about 20 minutes west of Fort Lauderdale. This was the first time the event was held outside of Atlanta. As this was my second SCC, I along with many others, was curious to find out how the event would be received and attended. I am very pleased to say that the event was a rousing success. I was told, and it did appear, that attendance ran about 400, similar to last year’s event — significant for this first year considering the concern generated by the move.

Some organizers spoke to me of the challenges of moving such a large event such as SCC, and although they mentioned a few glitches, I felt everything flowed smoothly. The hotel amenities were more than satisfactory and the staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. Broward County and the Fort Lauderdale convention bureau “Hello Sunny!” did an excellent job at well.

I arrived late Thursday afternoon from a business trip. Friday did seem quieter than last year, which I attributed to a good amount of first timers (many of course from Florida), and I met quite a few. The move to Florida did not stop many attendees from across the country and world, including once again, a good sized contingent from Norway and from England. Friday’s (ice breaking) activities paved the way for a fantastic Saturday, the highlight of which (and of the conference) was luncheon Keynote Speaker, Jazz Jennings. Jazz’s keynote preceded an on stage Q&A by the whole Jennings family, which infused a heartwarming sisterhood and brotherhood into the conference.

The Saturday Pool Party was fantastic, a gorgeous pool and 90 degree cloudless sky didn’t hurt either. The reception and Gala ran as expected. A great Tampa area band, She’s That Dude with board member Cristy Anderson on guitar and vocals, rocked the night away. And as always, there was the hotel main bar, a traditional gathering place. No complaints there! A great job by the SCC Board and Directors. I Will Return!
