Nex Benedict’s death is ruled a suicide. A Senate bill would provide more funding for mental health care for LGBTQ+ youth. The founder of Casa Ruby has been arrested. A Kansas judge rules transgender people don’t have a right to change the gender marker on driver’s licenses or state I.D. In Georgia a compromise allows doctors to prescribe puberty blockers and HRT to teenagers who were already receiving gender-affirming care. In states with anti-LGBTQ laws, hate crimes have quadrupled. Dylan Mulvaney releases a new song titled Days Of Girlhood. England’s National Health Service announces it will no longer prescribe puberty blockers to transgender teens. French President Emmanuel Macron denied transphobic rumors that his wife is transgender. India Willoughby calls the cops when J.K. Rowling posts a “hate crime” on X. A GOP state senator joins Democrats to vote against a bill that would ban trans girls form joining girls’ sports teams. A Texas chemistry teacher crossdresses in the school. The APA adopts a landmark policy affirming the benefit of gender-affirming care for kids. A drag queen publishes a book on math. There’s all that and a bit more in Trans News Now!
Four Years Since it All Changed
In January of 2020 the first case of Covid-19 was found on the west coast. The disease was ravaging China and without a pandemic plan here it wasn’t long until it was popping up all around the country. The administration spent way too long trying to minimize the danger, telling the nation that the disease would magically disappear. In the meantime bodies were being stored in makeshift morgues and refrigerated trucks. Sophie recalls 2020 and also recalls who was in charge at that time. The same administration that failed to act soon enough to the pandemic wants to return to power and they have made it clear that one of their major goals is to eliminate transgender people.

If you go out and about while presenting as a female you may have run into situations concerning your makeup that require repair. Eating something greasy, like fries, can remove your lip color. Dancing after in the evening after a long day in your morning makeup, or kissing, can result in your makeup needing a fix. Gina Jet Ortiz reccomends always having 10 items in your handbag that are necessary for makeup, and other, repair jobs while you’re away from home.
Religious Freedom or Oppression?
Right wing evangelicals are busy working to bring their idea of a Christian theocracy in our country to life. They want to impose their religious beliefs on everyone in the USA. The First Amendment of the Constitution says that “. . .Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. . .”. Religion is not supposed to have control of our government yet the right wing evangelicals in the GOP who have been elected or appointed to Congress, state legislatures, and the judiciary, are working to make all of our citizens comply with their beliefs. It’s not a new movement either. This Retro Rerun, written in 1998 by TGF contributor Judy Osborne, tells us that the right wing theocrats were busy at the end of the 20th century working to realize their vision.

Sheila Weinberg becomes the first transgender person to be elected to a city council seat in Israel. The American Psychological Association announces they have adopted a resolution which announces their belief that gender-affirming care for transgender children produces the best results. PFLAG sues Ken Paxton over his demand to be given a list of trans kids getting care. Ignorant legislators in several states continue to introduce increasingly bizarre anti-trans bills. Judges continue to block those bills. The killer of Dime Doe is convicted. According to LGBTQ Nation, a drag ball in Harlem in 1936 was one of the biggest social events in New York City in that decade. Laverne Cox released a new music video this week, the second part of her TripHopera: Gretchen. The Trans Rights Indicator Project reports that trans rights are under attack in the around the world. Los Angeles County opens the first transgender voting center in the U.S. St. Louis Public Radio explores how Missouri became ground zero for anti-transgender legislation.

Trans News Now 2/26/24
What’s going on in regard to transgender people and issues? Cecilia Gentili’s funeral at St. Patrick’s Cathedral was cut short and the Archbishop spoke out against Ms. Gentili. Friends of the deceased want an apology from the Church. A man is on trial for the murder of his secret transgender girlfriend. He allegedly killed her to keep her from talking about their relationship. The city council of Columbia, Missouri declares itself a “safe haven” for LGBTQ+ people. Legislation and court battles over transgender people’s rights continue to dominate the news. In good news, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals rules that a Texas law banning drag performances cannot be put into effect. Some conservatives in Georgia speak out against a bill which would ban the teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity saying it would limit parent’s choice in education. Several Republican members of the House of Representatives threaten to shut down the government if their anti-transgender policies are removed from budget negotiations. A new study finds that about one-third of transgender men still ovulate while on testosterone therapy. Lux Pascal is cast in an upcoming thriller, The Summer War. The funeral service for Cecilia Gentili filled St. Patrick’s Cathedral but it wasn’t a hit with New York’s Catholics. State legislatures continue to introduce bills they say are to “protect” children when the bills would do the opposite. The ACLU has filed suit against the state of Virginia, over its model policies on dealing with transgender students. The woman who “outed” a student who was not transgender and exposed her to abuse has been censured by the Utah State Board of Education. Saruda “Pimai” Panyakham is Miss Trans Thailand 2024. The legislature of Wyoming thinks it knows what’s good for a transgender child. Legislators in Tennessee are considering a bill which would require doctors who provide gender-affirming medical care to fill out forms that would allow the state to identify the patients. Callie Butcher is a transgender woman from Texas who is seeking a seat in the House of Representatives. Lilly Wachowski will direct Trash Mountain. A Mexican newscaster is the first to do his show in drag and death threats arrive. The 2022 U.S. transgender Survey released results this week. 92,329 transgender and non-binary responded and only a small number were unhappy after transition. The National LGBTQ Task Force has a new Director of Advocacy and Action. The Virginia state legislature defeats the entire slate of anti-transgender legislation before it this year. The North Carolina restroom bill started the restroom war eight years ago. A transgender woman from Colorado has had her Canadian refugee status revoked. A cisgender girl in Utah receives police protection for death threats after a member of the state Board of Education claims that she is transgender. Transgender activists stage die-ins at Florida driver’s license offices statewide, protesting the state’s stance on changing genders on official ID. History Repeats
Sophie Lynne writes about Magnus Hirschfeld, the gay Jewish man who coined the word “transvestite” and became the first sex researcher in Weimar Germany. After Hitler came to power Hirschfeld’s research was burned by the Brown Shirts. Looking at recent news Sophie fears that history is repeating.
