Makeup Confessions!

Can’t speak for anyone else, but putting on makeup did not come naturally for me. Oh, I remember experimenting with mascara as an adolescent, and getting yelled at by Mom, but the first time I actually tried to put on eye shadow, well . . . it’s probably better left unsaid.

But, I’m going to tell you about it anyway.

The year was 1992. I was about to start my final year at college. As often happens in college towns, rental homes are passed along between college kids.

I moved into one such house as three girls were moving out. One of those girls took her sweet time. I was in the house by myself for about two weeks before she finally got all her things and left, making way for my friends to shift in.

But during those two weeks, when I lived alone…yeah, you can guess what I did. I did the very bad thing, by going through her wardrobe. There wasn’t anything that fit, or was even worth trying on in the first place, but that doesn’t make it right.

However, and this may even be worse: she left some makeup in the bathroom cabinet. Not knowing about the possibility of infection, I tried it on. (I think I can be excused, don’t you? I didn’t know any better.)

But the worse crime is yet to come: It was blue eyeshadow! And it gets worse. I didn’t know how to put it on. I didn’t have any glamor magazines around to help, so I went by memory one evening. I spread some on my eyelids. And because that didn’t look quite right, I put some under my eyes. Picture it: Blue eyeshadow, circling my eyes, like a gay Lone Ranger mask. I’m not proud of this, you understand.

And how could it get worse? Oh, a friend came over to visit. But I’ll tell you about that some other time.

LOL. Sure, build the suspense with the friend at the door then stop!

I once hurriedly answered the door bell barefoot . . . the neighbors 8 year old girl was there looking for my 8 year old daughter to come out and play. I said, “she’s not home from school yet and I’ll send her over when she gets home.” Later that night my daughter asked me why I painted my toe nails – – – DOH!

I have no problem picturing the blue eyeshadow! We all seem to try “that” blue – its always in those cheap multi color kits we first buy under the pretext of getting a Christmas gift for someone . . . to this day I don’t know if blue is soooo not my color, or if its just the scary memories of first attempts at using blue. :^)
