Time for all the news from the transgender world! What do we learn today? Mara Keisling is fighting the Trump administration to maintain our rights. Michigan honors the creator of International Transgender Day of Visibility. Monica Helms, creator of the trans pride flag, writes about how it feels to see it in the halls of congress. Euro Pride won’t allow groups that demean other groups to participate. As the Equality Act is debated it’s amazing what representatives believe about trans people. Chelsea Manning is out of solitary but still in stir since she won’t talk. Google has appointed the president of the right wing Heritage Foundation to an advisory council and Google employees are not taking it well. Many rural trans people are happy living where they are. Today we learn many things in TWIT. Among them, Tanwarin Sukkapisit is the first transgender person elected to the parliament of Thailand. All the court stays on the trans military ban have been lifted. Several members of congress posted the transgender pride flag at their office entrances for the International Day of Transgender Visibility. A bill in California would make it illegal to do genital surgery on intersex children without their consent. A bill in Texas would let medical and legal professionals, as well as barbers deny service to people who offend their “deeply-held religious beliefs.” A research study shows that trans women have better cognitive skills if they take estrogen after GCS. Trans people in the D.C. area can take advantage of a database of healthcare providers. In the midst of the Brexit mess the British government is being petitioned to increase funding for gender clinics. Australian trans actress and advocate Georgie Stone has been cast as a transgender character on a soap opera. Dex Frier was hoping to be prom king but had to settle for being one of two “royal knights.” Denver, Colorado wrapped up its Denver Drag Days festivities with a record breaking drag brunch. The Week In Trans is here! What do we learn today? The 1982 film Tootsie has been turned into a Broadway play and it opens at the end of the month. The trans military ban is back on hold but don’t hold your breath. More court activity to come. The Canadian Armed Forces have issues new directives on how to treat trans troops. A trans activist from Honduras says a wall will not stop people from seeking refuge in the U.S. Republicans are reluctant to renew the Violence Against Women Act since it includes for the prisons to consider the safety of trans prisoners. A school district in Georgia has blocked a trans boy from running for prom king. Trans candidates are running in local Philadelphia elections. A study shows men who identify as cisgender but have sex with trans women have a higher-than-average HIV infection rate. And there’s lots of other news plus a few TWIT Awards. This week the House will take up the Equality Act. Trans people who ran for congress last year lost because they didn’t raise enough money. Danica Roem has raised more money after she was threatened with pickets from the Westboro Baptist Church. There’s a European drag river cruise set for this summer. Some trans people are not told that they may not be fertile after they begin hormone therapy. A 9-year-old trans kid is profiled on the BBC. Martina Navratilova has apologized for her comments on trans women athletes — sort of. An Egyptian trans woman was taken into custody and has not been heard from. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says she supports non-binary gender identity. An airline industry group will be adding an unspecified gender identification on plane tickets. A post-operative trans woman prisoner is serving her time in a male prison. California’s Director of Digital Media is a trans man. A Dutch study indicating that hormones may cause heart problems for trans people may be flawed. Some trans people are afraid facial recognition software could out them but the designers of the software have given very little thought to transgender people. ’60s trans soul singer Jackie Shane passed away and has obituaries in major newspapers. And now! The Week In Trans! Today we learn that the Canadian government used its Twitter account to promote a Canadian drag performer on RuPaul’s Drag Race. South Dakota’s House of Representatives passed a bill banning education on transgender issues to elementary school students. Tennessee is working on a law that puts being trans in the restroom in the same as exposing ones self. But the state also has decided crimes against trans people are hate crimes. Congress is seeing bills in both houses designed to protect trans military personnel. An actress playing a trans role in a BBC mystery turns out to be trans herself. The goal of a trans woman named Erin Parisi is to climb the highest mountains on each continent. A Naval Academy graduate alleges she was forced to resign because she is trans while the Navy maintains she sexually harassed someone. A trans woman is suing Harvard saying that she was denied admission to graduate programs there after she rebuffed sexual advances by someone in the admissions office. First though, to clear the palette, she serves up a bit of information on the possibilities of finding out by testing which children might grow up and be trans. Then she serves up the supposition that many of the recent depictions of drag and trans characters on TV and in films are not as positive as they might seem.
