As we mentioned in the news, shortly after Charlie Kirk was shot to death, there was a story that “transgender” messages were found on a shell casing. It turns out that the messages etched on the shells were not transgender at all, although one of the four did have an anti-LGBTQ message. Of the four, two had anti-left messages, and two had anti-right messages. For spreading the word about the “transgender” message, even though they released the full messages the following day, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives gets a TWIT. Erin Reed has this story.
Trevor Robinson, a 22-year-old cisgender male, has been arrested in connection with the shooting of Charlie Kirk. Before the arrest, some right-wing web sites had a story about a 29-year-old transgender woman, a law clerk from Seattle named Michaela, who they alleged was the shooter. She was at work in Seattle all day on the day of the shooting. For bad research, everyone who posted this or any other story connecting any transgender individual to this shooting shares a TWIT. This story comes from The Advocate.
Shortly after the killing of Charlie Kirk, Donald Trump Jr. said on Megan Kelly’s show, “I can’t name, including probably like al Qaeda and the Taliban, a group that is more violent per capital than the radical trans movement.” He said this on September 11, the anniversary of the attacks by al Qaeda on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania. For hyperbole in the service of animus, Donald Trump Jr. gets a TWIT. The Advocate has this story.
A new bill in Alabama specifically outlaws positive depictions of transgender people in books to be lent by libraries in the state. According to Erin Reed, the bill, as it reads, does not prohibit negative depiction of transgender people, only depictions of us as decent human beings. (Technically, I suppose that a librarian could interpret that at a “neutral” depiction of a transgender person, and try to argue that that is permissible, but at best that is unexplored territory.) For attempting to ban the depiction of any transgender person in a positive way, and for attempting to give all transgender youngsters in the state a negative self-image, the supporters of this portion of the bill get a TWIT.
A professor at Texas A&M University has been fired for discussing gender identity, and an administrator was removed for not rushing to remove the offending professor. For failing to see that the first amendment’s protection of freedom of speech covers the right of a professor to include the right to cover a theoretically controversial topic is forbidden, the Regents of Texas A&M University get a TWIT. The Advocate has this story.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth fired the Director of Medical Services for Expeditionary Medical Facility Bravo, Commander Janelle Matra. It seems that her bio included the title “Deputy Medical Director of Transgender Care for the Navy.” He was tipped off by a tweet from Libs Of TikTok, a group not known for thorough thought. The self-proclaimed Secretary of War declared, “Her pronouns are she/her/fired.” For firing personnel without a thorough exam of evidence, and for rushing to say that anyone who even worked with transgender people should be fired, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth gets a TWIT. This story comes from PinkNews.
Candidates in 85% of the elections last year included anti-LGBTQ statements in their campaigns, according to a new study from Outright International. Now, that is the percentage of elections that had a candidate use anti-LGBTQ statements, not the percentage of candidates who made such comments. Still, it is a troubling statistic. All these candidates for office who use anti-LGBTQ sentiments to help them get elected receive a collective TWIT. The Advocate has this story.
A tweet on X raised the question of whether producers on Jeopardy were kind to Amy Schneider during her eight-week run as Jeopardy champion. The answer is “no,” as she herself said on the platform. Also, it is well known that, after a quiz show scandal in the 1950s, there have been strict rules and regulations put in effect to prevent the producers of game shows from trying to favour a particular candidate. for suggesting that the producers would violate the laws in order to assist a particular contestant just because that contestant is transgender, X user El Dingo Goat gets a TWIT. This story comes from Them.
