As we mentioned in the news, the Trump administration is suspending $175 million in federal funding for the University of Pennsylvania, in retaliation for transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. The student athlete in question finished her career almost three years ago. For carrying a grudge, for continuing to allow history to guide present policies, and for insisting on punishing an institution which did something that was legal at the time, the Trump administration gets a TWIT. The Associated Press has this story.
Also in the news, the Texas Newsroom reported that the state of Texas kept data on people who requested a change of gender on their driver’s license. The state did not say what they will do with that information. For keeping secret files on people, and for not saying what they plan to do with the information, the state of Texas gets a TWIT.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has asked the state to investigate charging teachers with child abuse if they use a student’s requested name and pronoun rather than those associated with the gender assigned at birth. For abuse of the power of government, and for political hyperbole, Texas Governor Greg Abbott gets a TWIT. Erin In The Morning has this story.
Elon Musk has had a thing against transgender people. He is now blaming transgender people for sparking the vandalism being done to Tesla cars and cybertrucks, even though that vandalism is being done by cisgender people. For taking an opportunity to blame transgender people for something that we aren’t doing, Elon Musk gets a TWIT. This story comes from Them.
Representative Nancy Mace has been making her reputation as an opponent of transgender people. Recently, she responded out of the blue to a social media post from a transgender person who had written, “I love estrogen,” and posted before and after pictures. Representative Mace also called for HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to take action, even though the First Amendment forbids the government from censoring speech. After Representative Mace called attention to the post, the person who posted it has received a lot of pushback from strangers, and even death threats. For unleashing havoc on someone in order to gain political power, and for the use of bad logic, Representative Nancy Mace and her followers get a TWIT. The Advocate has this story.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has removed LGBTQ people and women from a State Department report on human rights violations around the world. However, we shouldn’t feel too bad, since such that report also failed to include mentions of people with disabilities and government corruption. For ignoring human rights abuses against LGBTQ people, women, and people with disabilities, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his team get a TWIT. This story comes from Politico.
In Arkansas, a bill was introduced which would make “contributing to social transitioning” of a minor a criminal offence. Among the things outlawed are the use of a pronoun which does not conform with the minor’s gender assigned at birth, using a name other than that on the birth certificate, and giving a minor a haircut that makes the minor look more like the gender with which they identify. For increasing the presence of government in people’s lives, and for threatening citizens with criminal offences for supporting other citizens, the sponsors of this bill get a TWIT. The Advocate has this story.
