As we mentioned in the news, this week the report from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services was released. It found that that gender-affirming care is safe and effective. It found that gender-affirming care produces the results desired by the patient and that those results create better outcomes in terms of mental health. It also found that the risks such as cardiovascular problems and cancer were negligible. The report is dated August 6, 2024, but was released last week, nearly ten months later. For delaying the release of this report, and for trying to hide its results from the general public, the Republicans of the Utah legislature, and the management of the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, share a TWIT. This story comes from Them.

The state legislature of Texas passed a bill which defines “Male” and “Female” according to their potential role in reproduction. The same bill also requires that the “biological sex” be listed on forms of identification, rather than the gender with which one identifies. For removing a piece of information which better identifies the individual from its identification cards, and replacing it with a piece of information which is less able to be used to distinguish people, and for giving in to prejudice in this matter, the Texas state legislature gets a TWIT. The Texas Tribune has this story.

In Seattle, a far-right Christian group held a rally in a neighborhood with a large percentage of LGBTQ residents. The protests resulted in 22 adults being arrested for assault and obstruction, and one juvenile charged with obstruction. For protesting in favour of more discrimination, and for getting so wrapped up in the protest that they did not observe basic civility, the people involved in this protest get a TWIT. This story comes from The Advocate.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that one of President Trump’s goals in his disagreement with Harvard University is to see “less LGBTQ graduate majors.” First off, when enumerating people (and other items which are integers), one should use “fewer,” not “less.” Secondly, the fact that this administration dislikes LGBTQ people does not by itself diminish the value of “LGBTQ majors.” Also, the major is in LGBTQ studies, but the phrase “LGBTQ majors” seems to indicate that one is studying how to be LGBTQ, which hardly needs a college degree. For poor word choice and for displaying prejudice, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt gets a TWIT. The Advocate has this story.

One of the well-documented problems with “bathroom bills” is that many times the people who are targeted are using the correct restroom for their “biological sex,” but just don’t look like look enough like most people of their “biological sex.” Erin In The Morning has the story of a transgender man who was detained for using the women’s room, which the state’s anti-transgender bathroom bill requires him to use. For designing bills where following the demands of the law can get one into so much trouble, the legislators behind these bathroom bills get a TWIT, which they share with the lobbyists behind the bills and the public who back these bills.
