Two years ago, Republicans in the Utah state legislature commissioned a report on the harmful effects of gender-affirming care. Although the report was submitted to them on August 6, 2024, it only became public this past week. The report from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services found that “the consensus of the evidence supports that treatments are effective in terms of mental health, psychosocial outcomes, and the induction of body changes consistent with the affirmed gender in paediatric GD [gender dysphoria] patients.” Moreover, they found that “the evidence also supports that the treatments are safe in terms of changes to bone density, cardiovascular risk factors, metabolic changes, and cancer.” The report also cites 230 studies in reaching its conclusions. The U.S. Army has released its plan for getting transgender people out of its ranks. Transgender people have until June 6 to leave the army voluntarily; involuntary separation begins on Saturday, June 7, according to the plan. This story comes from Army Times.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services sent letters to hospitals that provide gender-affirming care to children and adolescents, demanding data on their quality standards and their finances. They want to know how much gender-affirming care for minors is being paid for by Medicaid. The Hill has this story.

Legislators in Texas have passed a bill which would require that the person’s sex assigned at birth be the gender listed on state identification cards and driver’s licenses. The bill also defines the sex assigned at birth according to the potential role played in reproduction. This story comes from Them.

This is the time of year for graduation. The Colorado Springs Gazette reports that three transgender seniors graduated from the Air Force Academy, but were not commissioned, due to President Trump’s ban on transgender people in the military.

President Trump has been threatening the state of California in regards to its policy which allows transgender athletes to participate in athletics in the gender with which they identify. The California Interscholastic Federation has adopted a new policy, one in which cisgender girls who were beaten by transgender athletes can share the winner’s podium with the athlete to whom they lost. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier threatened a gym over its policy allowing transgender women to use the ladies’ locker room. The Advocate has this story.

We mentioned recently that the Michigan state House of Representatives, where the Republicans have a majority, passed a ban on transgender females on girls’ sports teams. Leaders of the state Senate, where the Democrats have the majority, have said that they have no intention of looking into such a ban. Erin Reed has this story.

A transgender woman who stabbed a man to death in a deli has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. The story in the New York Post is rather sensational, but the details are there.

A second man has been sentenced to prison for his role in supplying the heroin laced with fentanyl which killed Cecilia Gentili. This story comes from The Advocate.

The Supreme Court declined to hear a case on the constitutionality of a Massachusetts ban on t-shirts which say, “There are only two genders.” That leaves the lower court rulings that the ban does not violate the first amendment’s free speech clauses in place. The Advocate has this story.

Sir Ian McKellen will provide an introduction to a new production of Twelfth Night, which will feature a cast who are entirely transgender or non-binary. The play will be performed at The Space in London on July 25. This story comes from Them.

Tia Carrere told People magazine how proud she is of her transgender son, Jude, age 19. Jude was seen on the red carpet for Lilo & Stitch, even though his mother was busy working on another project and could not attend the premiere.

A new poll by Pew Research finds that about 60% of LGBTQ+ adults see the level of acceptance for transgender and non-binary people as less than the level of acceptance for gay, lesbian, or bisexual people. Only about 10% said that the acceptance level for transgender and non-binary people was about the same as for gay, lesbian, or bisexual people. The Associated Press has this story.

Nick Mollberg is a software engineer in Texas. He testified before the state Senate, telling them, “If we were sitting here 50 years ago, 60 years ago, instead of talking about trans women going into bathrooms, you’d be talking about Black women going into white bathrooms.
