Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramasawamy has a new ad out, and it highlights his opposition to gender-affirming care for minors. The ad presents two detransitioners, and seems to leave the impression that, if they were left to their own, most trans people would grow out of their gender dysphoria. That idea seems to come from research that did not separate people with gender dysphoria (or gender identity disorder, into their own category. Instead, they lumped everyone who displayed behavior that is inconsistent with the gender norms of the time into one big category. Many of those who “grow out” or gender dysphoria never had it in the first place, under any terminology. So, just by saying that they thought that they were transgender, the detransitioners are differentiating themselves from most of the people in the study who “grew out” of their gender dysphoria. Most studies estimate detransitioners at no more than 2% of those who have had gender dysphoria. For presenting the very unusual as if they were the norm, and for promoting discrimination based on misinformation, the Vivek Ramaswamy campaign gets a Twit Award. This story comes from Into More.

Nebraska Governor James Pillen signed an executive order he refers to as a “Women’s Bill of Rights.” It starts by stating that “a person’s biological sex is defined at birth,” and goes on to define who is a female using criteria which are rejected by biologists. It goes on to define a female as a “person whose biological reproductive system is designed to produce ova” and a male as a “person whose biological reproductive system is designed to fertilize the ova of a female,” with complete disregard for intersex people and others whose reproductive systems are atypical. For signing an executive order which legalizes discrimination, and for citing biology as a reason for this law when biologists disagree, Governor James Pillen gets a Twit Award.
