Twit Awards for the Week 4/1/24
This year, it happened that Transgender Day of Visibility fell on Easter Sunday. Reuters had to create a fact check to tell some people that Transgender Day of Visibility is always on March 31, which is not always Easter. For presuming that transgender people are deliberately insulting you when in fact you deliberately insult them, those who presumed that transgender people chose Easter to be Transgender Day of Visibility get a Twit Award.
The New York Post promoted a letter from Paul Chesser, a Disney shareholder and anti-transgender activist. He plans to introduce a proposal at the Disney annual meeting, calling on the company to support detransitioners. He seems to think that all, or almost all, trans people get gender-confirmation surgery, and that a great many of us later develop regret about that surgery. He also presumes that policies which fail to punish us encourage, even promote, people changing genders. For making multiple errors in logic, and for getting all hung up on something which barely exists, Paul Chesser gets a Twit Award.
Chaya Raichik, the person behind Libs of TikTok, is taking a lot of credit for the alleged success of a boycott against Planet Fitness. First, the gym company has not changed its policy, which is not so much pro-transgender as it is anti-harassment and also opposed to photographing people in the locker room. Moreover, despite Ms. Raichik’s claims, there is no evidence that a great many people cancelled their memberships to protest the inclusion of transgender people, and the drop in stock price is common in March, according to LGBTQ Nation. For rushing to take credit for something without checking out what happens every year, Chaya Raichik gets a Twit Award.
Jennifer Sey, a former competitive gymnast and former executive at Levi’s, has founded a new athletic clothing brand, called XX-XY. She is promoting it as “the only athletic brand that stands up for women’s sports.” To elaborate, the company’s “mission” statement begins, “We believe that women deserve the opportunities that sports and single sex spaces provide.” For founding the brand on the promotion of exclusion and prejudice, Jennifer Sey gets a Twit Award. In the madness to keep transgender women out of sports, some conservatives are complaining because Noa-Lyn van Leuven, a transgender woman, won a place on the Dutch women’s darts team. Mind you, no one has yet come up with an explanation of how transgender women have a natural advantage at darts. For taking this whole thing too far, opponents of transgender women on darts teams get a Twit Award. This story comes from LGBTQ Nation.
California conservatives are suing the state’s Attorney General. They have a ballot proposal which they call the “Protect Kids of California Act of 2024. Attorney General Rob Bonta calls it the “Restricts Rights of Transgender Youth Initiative.” The ballot proposal would require schools to inform parents if they child identifies as a different gender, forbid transgender girls from participating in women’s or girl’s sports, and would regulate restroom and other school facilities according to the gender assigned at birth. That certainly looks like it restricts the rights of transgender students, more than it protects kids. For disputing the reality of what their proposal does, the proponents of the Protect Kids of California Act of 2024 get a Twit Award. LGBTQ Nation has this story.
