The shutdown of the government is over. The good news: there are no anti-transgender riders in the package approved by the U.S. Senate to reopen the government. The bad news is that the House of Representatives has to approve the package, and there could be some who attach anti-transgender riders. Erin Reed has this story at Erin In The Morning.

Seventeen transgender people who have been members of the U.S. Air Force for between 15 and 19 years have filed suit against the service for reneging on its offer of early retirement. CBS News has this story.

Attorneys representing Becky Pepper-Jackson have responded to the U.S. Supreme Court in its review of a decision which allows her to run on the girls’ track and cross-country teams at school. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in January. This story comes from West Virginia Watch.

As we mentioned last week, the Supreme Court has ruled that the Trump administration may enact a policy which equates the “sex” designation on a passport with the sex assigned at birth and listed on the original birth certificate. Many transgender veterans have lost their health benefits from the VA, as well as housing and jobs. Advocates for the transgender community are recommending that state governments step up and help provide the benefits that the Trump administration has taken away. Danielle Mittereder, a TSA officer at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, is suing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Ms. Mittereder is upset that she has to call over someone else to pat down a traveler. She is not allowed to do pat-downs because she is transgender. This story comes from The Advocate.
