The state of California has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Education, claiming that their policy forcing schools to out transgender students to their parents is unconstitutional. The state has also obtained a restraining order, keeping the Department of Education from enforcing that policy, at least for the moment. The Advocate has this story.
California joined Colorado, Illinois, and Minnesota in suing the Trump administration over cuts in funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to states. The funds were approved by Congress, but the Department of Health and Human Services say that they are “inconsistent with agency priorities.” According to the lawsuit, the cuts in funding come from political animus, not policy. When the British government banned puberty blockers and effectively banned gender-affirming care for minors, advocates for LGBTQ+ health care predicted that there would be a sharp rise in suicides and suicide attempts among transgender people. The government reported no such increase, and many took that as a sign that the medical studies were wrong, that there wasn’t a connection between gender-affirming care and a reduction in suicides and suicide attempts. New Hampshire Governor Kelly Ayotte has vetoed the anti-transgender bathroom bill which was passed by the state’s legislature.
