Amanda’s East Coast Anxiety

After a long sojourn in California Amanda is back on the East Coast. She stopped in her home town in Western Pennsylvania and then went on to Baltimore where she has lodgings with a friend and drives for Lyft. While she was in California she felt that the area she was in was beautiful but there was something wrong. She had anxiety attacks that were crippling. She felt that it might help to return to the east. Now she is in Baltimore and while things have improved she is still subject to anxiety. She wonders if California was only partly to blame for her condition and if perhaps it is her estrogen that is the culprit.

On behalf of a trans friend who wanted to begin transition The Artist D! began to make inquiries in her town about where to go for hormone therapy and eventual gender confirmation surgery. Believing that her city was one of the bigger, more progressive areas in the USA D expected things to proceed fairly quickly in the search for information. Apparently their expectations were too high. It seems The Artist D!’s “big city” is not as well informed about transgender issues as they thought. Which leaves D wondering what trans people in really remote small towns do for medical care.

Dana Bevan has been reading about the origins of the Prenatal Testosterone Theory of Being Transgender. That’s the theory that says you become trans due to different levels of testosterone exposure while you’re still in the womb. She finds the theory has roots in eugenics and “therapies” to “cure” homosexuality. The theory has been discredited but that doesn’t keep some people from still pushing for hormone therapy to “fix” gender and sexuality.
