Lynda Martini has been getting out and about a lot in the past several months. From Halloween parties to out of town visits, and going to a football game, Lynda likes to have fun. But another event is looming. One that she longs for but won’t necessarily be fun. In just a few days Lynda will be going into the hospital for her gender confirmation surgery. All the while she has been having fun she has also been preparing for surgery and recovery. And while she had things all planned out and the date set, there was a glitch.

Then she has a light, fluffy item about a middle-aged trans woman who is a “Lolita.” The frillier the better for this girl. Then she turns to a tasty item about a mysterious Playboy centerfold whose breast defied physics. Canadians have the advantage of getting their healthcare taken care of by their government. There is no need for health insurance in Canada as each citizen has government paid healthcare. But, and you knew there just might be a “but,” trans people in Canada can get their GRS covered — and nothing more. The government plan does not pay for removal of testes, hormones, breast implants, trachea shaves or voice surgery. Last week a report was published in The New Atlantis, a quarterly journal with conservative or skeptical tendencies. It was about a “study” done by two individuals, Mayer and McHugh, who oppose the idea that trans people are real. They ascribe trans behavior to mental illness or a phase of child development. Their “study” has been picked up and disseminated by right wing media outlets. Our own scientist in residence, Dr. Dana Bevan, goes through the Mayer and McHugh “study” point by point and reveals how the authors cherry picked their data.

TG Teens Require a Different Pre-Surgery Protocol

Dr. Sherman Leis talks about treating TG teens. Because transgender teens are in the middle of experiencing puberty, transitioning strategy for them is not the same as for adult TGs. Special protocols are necessary for teens to delay normal early pubertal changes, and then to add hormones appropriate to their true mental and emotional gender in order for them to experience a puberty congruent with their desired gender.
