The Medical University of South Carolina announces they will discontinue gender-affirming medical care, even for adults. Trans News Now 7/8/24
Last week right-wing news sites reported that the Biden administration pushed some medical organizations to recommend surgery for minors. That was not what the administration was doing. Last week, the Supreme Court struck down a ruling which had told courts they should give a good bit of weight to the position of federal agencies in deciding cases. Non-binary runner Nikki Hiltz qualified for the U.S Olympic team. Several former contestants from RuPaul’s Drag Race have formed Drag PAC. It’s dedicated to getting Gen Z to register and vote. The Cass Review got another critical response this week. A group from Yale said the Review,”obscures key findings, misrepresents its own data, and is rife with misapplications of the scientific method.” Indya Moore has been cast as Wanda in season two of The Sandman. Keir Starmer is the new Prime Minister of England. He has said some things which make us hopeful. Trans News Now 7/1/24
A transgender Russian politician is ordered by her government to detransition or be sent to a mental institution. The Supreme Court agrees to take a look at the constitutionality of Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. A judge in Montana rules a bill in that state which defined people’s sex according to chromosomes was too vague. Some doctors in Florida are again providing gender-affirming medical care. The Texas Supreme Court rules the state’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors is constitutional. The Ohio House of Representatives attach a provision to the education bill banning transgender students from using the restroom corresponding to their gender identity. 617 anti-transgender bills were filed this year. Two members of the California Assembly almost come to blows over a bill preventing school districts from enforcing policies to notify parents if their child shows up at school in a different gender. Due to all the anti-transgender legislation distress, depression, and suicidal thoughts have been increasing. The majority of young people getting breast reduction surgery are cisgender males who developed unwanted breasts. A group of clinicians and academics publishes a review of the Cass Report. They call it “deeply flawed.” Next year’s Tokyo marathon will include a “non-binary” category. Peru announces it will no longer classify transgender people as “mentally ill.” President Biden issues a pardon to all veterans who were convicted and discharged because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

In Florida a trans woman runs for state office as a Democrat and DEI expert. Dr. Eithan Haim is in hot water over violating patient privacy. And the trans kids whose info he stole were not even his patients. The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals rules that a district court in Oklahoma was wrong to dismiss a case challenging the state’s refusal to update the sex marker on the birth certificates of transgender people. The Utah public-response line for violations of the bathroom law received over 12,000 responses. None were verified. Some people have enough time on their hands to stake out public restrooms? The Atlanta Comfort Conference will be held this August 14-18, 2024, at the Crown Plaza Ravinia at Perimeter. Seattle police are accused of misgendering and handcuffing a deaf transgender woman while she was being involuntarily committed to a hospital in 2019. Their contract let’s them get away with it. A poll shows sixty percent of Americans oppose laws which ban gender-affirming medical care for minors. Transgender adults are more likely to face loneliness than other adults. An off-Broadway production of Cats: The Jellicle Ball sets the story in a house ball. On a sad note we are sorry to report the passing of Lynn Conway. Florida is blocked by a federal judge from enforcing its ban on gender-affirming care. Mean while the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld Alabama’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. San Francisco has declares itself a safe haven for transgender and nonbinary individuals. Judge Reed O’Connor in Texas issued a temporary injunction against the Biden administration’s interpretation that Title IX protects transgender students. Lia Thomas has lost her challenge to the policy of World Aquatics which prevents transgender females from competing as women in swimming. The U.S. House of Representatives approves a defense appropriation bill which bans gender-affirming care being paid for by the Pentagon. The bill also bans drag shows on the base. Hunter Schafer is cast in the Blade Runner TV series. Sarah McBride is running unopposed for the U.S. Congress, after her primary opponent drops out. Get all the news in Trans News Now!

Lynn Ann Conway was an electrical engineer, computer scientist, and an activist on behalf of transgender people. She died in Jackson, Michigan on Sunday, June 9, 2024 of heart trouble.

Meanwhile one trans girl was attacked for going into the boys room. The DoJ investigates attacks on Latino and trans students in Norfolk. Tennessee has a new law criminalizing adults who help trans kids get gender-affirming care. Bailey Anne Kennedy is the first transgender woman to win the Miss Maryland contest. The Southern Poverty Law Center declares two anti-trans organizations to be hate groups. Public opinion of LGB people has shown a great increase in support but new polling shows much less support for transgender people. A Texas state representative who voted for a ban on gender-affirming care for kids loses the primary election to a Black queer woman. YouTube star and transgender actress Abigail Thorn will appear in House of the Dragon. Brazilian influencer Maya Massafera recently came out as transgender.
