The Ugly Duchess, by Flemish Renaissance artist Quinten Massys is determined to be of a man in drag. An ugly man. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signs into law the state’s extension of anti-discrimination legislation, which protects against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. New Mexico has also passed legislation amending its anti-discrimination law. Suspects have been arrested in several recent trans victim murder cases. Florida, Georgia, and West Virginia are banning or preparing to ban gender-affirming care for transgender minors. President Biden called the anti-transgender legislation in Florida “close to sinful”. Meanwhile legislators in Iowa and Arkansas have imposed bans on trans students using the school’s restroom and locker room facilities matching their gender identity. Texas wants people whose children are exposed to a drag show to be able to sue the performers. The trans woman who appeared in a Hersey’s ad for International Women’s Day became the target of transphobic hate. The Kum & Go chain of gas stations with convenience stores tweeted their support of trans rights. Victoria’s Secret is back with a lingerie fashion show that features transgender angels. President Biden’s proposed budget mentions the word “transgender” eight times. Meanwhile states around the nation continue to push anti-trans legislation. At the federal level a bill to ban trans girls from women’s sports is making its way through committee. Florida legislators want to take children away from parents that support their true gender. Eddie Izzard is now Suzy Eddie Izzard. Members of the GOP seem to think there are large numbers of trans people going back to their old gender. A trans teen asks the Virginia governor at a town hall how making him use the girls’ restroom is going to affect the girls. The Parasol Patrol protects kids from angry protesters at Drag Queen Story Hour. Hershey includes a trans woman in an ad campaign centered on International Women’s Day and conservative heads explode. Haters gonna hate. Hate based on lies and misinformation. The LGBTQ+ community doesn’t have an “agenda” that menaces straight white people. The existence of transgender people doesn’t take away things or threaten white, straight men. But lies spread to get votes cause real suffering. What’s in the news? A transgender woman will complete for the Miss Puerto Rico title. West Virginia’s ban on trans athletes is blocked. The number of Americans identifying as LGBTQ+ has gone up. Various southern state legislatures introduce dozens of bills that will harm transgender people if they become law. Texas leads the pack with 37 such laws introduced. The Indiana House passes a bill to protect families with trans kids from investigation by Child Services. Bans on drag queens could produce arrests at Pride events. After threats cause a drag show to be canceled a Mixed Martial Arts instructor offers his services as a guard for a rescheduled show. Vermont will allow parents to chose “nonbinary” on their child’s birth certificate. Shania Twain says drag queens are her inspiration. Fox series Accused has an episode featuring a drag queen whose boyfriend may have done a crime. People leaving red states to avoid oppression are heading to Canada. President Biden signs an executive order mandating the government to pursue equality in hiring. Several states are passing laws banning gender-affirming care for trans youth. South Dakota, Oklahoma, and Florida are all aboard the banning train. Marco Rubio has introduced a ban on transgender people in the military. Not to worry it is unlikely to be brought to a vote in the Senate. Texas wants to extend its ban on trans athletes in high school to stop trans youth competing in college. The New York Times is getting criticism from its own contributors for its slanted coverage of transgender issues. The trans woman who allegedly walked around a women’s spa with her penis exposed is finally going to trial. Kentucky wants to ban drag shows within 1000 feet of schools, parks, and homes. A church in Fargo, North Dakota has installed a transgender pastor. A nonbinary actor will portray the villain in Deadpool 3. Ticket sales for Chicago have gone up since Jinkx Monsoon took over the role of Matron “Mama” Morton. Spain has made it easier to legally change gender.
