Out & About — Costa Rica
First LGBT Night at a Local Watering Hole/Disco
You would think for a city of between 35 to 70,000 people there would be several LGBT watering holes. Not so in San Isidro, one of the largest cities in Costa Rica. Until a couple of weeks ago there were none. Even though there is a significant Gay/Lesbian population in the area. Possibly because the towns of Quepos (nicknamed Gaypos and it’s sister town (no pun) connected to it have an overflow of hotels restaurants and such with rainbow flags everywhere. Even before the invasions of foreigners to Costa Rica this area was a local gay haunt. Still they are an hour and a half’s drive away.
Well to the rescue came the new owners of the Brasilia Bar and Disco who had their first LGBT night a few weeks ago. It was a great success with nearly a full house — with one exception — I was the only T-Person there. The staff and other patrons treated me very well, all in Espanol of course. I tried to fit in well, not overdressed, but in shorts and a low cut T-shirt. The music was loud, and my friends and I were the first to hit the dance floor when to our surprise the management kept sending us free shooters. The younger crowd soon followed, and everybody danced the night long.
I think I have said it before, the Catholic family values here are strange. The populace is very loving and kind to me as a Gringa T-girl but they cannot wrap their mind around having one in their family so they move to the capital city four hours drive away. I have never seen any discrimination or sideways looks in my four years in CR toward anyone LGBT and I have met many here. In the 3 klm stretch of road from the highway toward our retreat centre there is one B- woman, 2 L’s, 2 married gay guys, and 2 T’s including me. All of us hire the local workers and they all love working for us, each being treated with enormous respect by us and them to us.
Anyway that is this month’s little report from Costa Rica, Central America where it is July all year long and almost no bitty bugs even in the jungle. Think you could get used to that.
