(Bala Cynwyd, PA)   Dr. Sherman Leis, transgender surgeon of international renown and founder of The Philadelphia Center for Transgender Surgery, was recognized by the Caroline Grace Foundation for his extraordinary efforts on behalf of the transgender community.  In remarks given by Caroline Temmermand, Chair of the Caroline Grace Foundation, at an awards ceremony in the Philadelphia area, Temmermand said: “Dr. Leis, who is our third award recipient, was nominated by a number of his patients for his exceptional surgical skills, respect for his patients, and willingness to admit patients to his practice who have complicated medical histories.  In addition, he is honored for his work training other transgender surgeons and his pioneering efforts improving the quality of transgender medicine, opening the doors of the medical community to transgender patients, and fostering a respectful and supportive environment there.”

The award was presented by Caroline Temmermand, Chair of the Caroline Grace Foundation.  Founded in 2011, this private and not for profit foundation seeks to honor those individuals who have done extraordinary things to improve the lives of transgender people, including: enhancing perceptions of transgender people, improving access to healthcare, demonstrating exceptional support and understanding, providing equal employment opportunities that go beyond policy statements, and championing fair and equal treatment(s) from laws, policies, or practices that improve the status, lifestyle, and environment of transgender people.

Dr. Leis said, “This is a very special award because it comes from such a prestigious organization representing the transgender community and doing such outstanding work.  I truly appreciate it very much.”The award itself is in the shape of a translucent flame on which was engraved the words:

The first award was given to Vicki Thoms, a 55 year old hairdresser, who stopped the violent beating of a woman in a Rosedale, Maryland McDonald’s restaurant that sent the victim into seizures. When asked why she stepped in to end the assault when others – including restaurant employees – were just standing there, she said, “They started really hurting her, to the point where I thought she was going to die, and I decided someone needed to do something.”  When informed by others that the victim was transgender, Vicki said she didn’t care.

The second award was given to Linda Siegfriedt – Clinical Instructor, Specialist in Voice – for her valuable work in speech pathology for transgender patients.

Dr. Sherman Leis is the founder of The Philadelphia Center For Transgender Surgery, in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, one of the leading facilities in the world specializing in gender reassignment surgery.
