Costa Rica: Coming Out TG in a Foreign Land

Well here I am in Costa Rica Central America, originally invited by another Canadian for a two week stay and I’m still here four years later. I just turned sixty recently and let’s say I have lived a full life already. From lifetime company owner entrepreneur, CEO, rock musician, husband, parent, straight/gay/CD/MtF TG fluid, pansexual, LGBT writer/activist, spiritual teacher/retreat owner and sexual Tantra instructor. I am stuck full of so many labels I look like one of those old suitcases or steamer trunks.

In Canada I was as out as much as I felt like on any given day, as guy, girl, or anything in between, but coming to a foreign land with different customs, and a predominantly Catholic one at that, one must be respectful until you live amongst the people for some time.

I live near one of the largest cities in CR called San Isidro, where there is a very healthy gay and lesbian population, but I have only ever seen one other TG a few years ago and you know we have our ways to spot each other even more powerful than gaydar. I feel it may be that same old thing, one must move away to the very big city to be able to blossom.

The family is very strong here, mostly in a good way but I fear bending the gender bar may be too much for most to bear. So how would they take a foreigner being obviously TG. Well in my series on FaceBookComing Out in a Foreign Land, I documented some of that in words, poetry, and pictures. Since I am MtF having been on HRT for some three years at the time (off now), my looks had softened some and my breasts had extended some beyond the guy-that-works-out look to be errr, a little more to the point, if ya know what I mean. Well no more shirt off at the beach for me, well around all the young men at least.

Having a small bit of celebrity as a musician in the area means everyone was always used to the fact that I wore a little tasteful eye makeup all of the time. So it became very easy for me even in my guy T-shirt and shorts to switch from him to her by just adjusting my composure and walk. In the stores or bank they may even call me Senora, and the same boys who would give me the guy nod are now looking down my top, giving me that broad “hey babe” smile. Well, the joys of being TG fluid, being able to be fully guy or all the way to full girl dressed and made-up to kill. This is a marvelously accepting country and culture at least from the point of view of a foreigner coming out in a new land.

The bottom line is wherever you are take your time to explore the area intimately. Most people can accept almost anything if it is not shoved down their throat or should you try to overdress in an environment where it’s not suitable. I went to an LGBT night at a local disco/bar in the city the other night where I was the only TG. I was still with my minimal eye makeup, dressed in my low neck guy T-shirt but had cut off blue jean shorts so just skirting the side of femme with that, but was able to be my total femme persona and everyone was very nice to me. Even in our eccentricities we still need to fit in.

So that was my first report from Costa Rica. In the next issues I will write about how all TG’s are two-spirited and later how Tantric Sex is the only way to fly, no matter what gender you or your partner are.
