(Bala Cynwyd, PA)  One of the main reasons female-to-male (F2M) bottom surgery has lagged behind male-to-female (M2F) bottom surgery has been that the technology had not yet been developed to surgically create a penis that performed as realistically as it looked, according to Dr. Sherman Leis at the Philadelphia Center for Transgender Surgery and an expert in bottom surgery for transgender men and women. Now, with the development of new penile implant technology, transgender men will be able to have genitals that both look realistic and also provide a more natural sexual experience.

According to Dr. Sherman Leis, the number one question everyone asks relating to bottom surgery is, “Can I have sex after transgender surgery?” Dr. Leis says, “Thanks to this new technology, after having bottom surgery, virtually every trans man will be able to enjoy very realistic sexual intercourse, even to the point of experiencing an orgasm.”

To accomplish this, Dr. Leis has enhanced patient satisfaction with a surgical technique that builds a realistic looking penis using skin from the patient’s lower abdominal area. During surgery, the clitoris is repositioned in a way that permits stimulation and orgasm from sexual activity.

Until recently, there have been a number of unsuccessful ways to create firmness in a penis formed through reconstructive surgery, but nothing quite as successful and realistic as one can with this new technology. Dr. Leis notes that the new technology involves surgically implanting two semi-rigid cylinders, available in different sizes. The insert is then wrapped with a Gore-Tex material, which stimulates natural cellular growth that holds the implants in place, providing a very realistic look and feel. Because the implant is firm, easily adjustable, and does not require a pump like other implants, patients simply adjust it in an upward angle when they want to engage in intercourse. When not being used for intercourse, the implant conceals to the body, like a natural penis would.

Said Dr. Leis, “Because transitioning is a lifelong dream for my patients, I want to help them achieve their dream through surgery.

He noted, “As important as it is for my patients to be satisfied with their results, I am especially gratified when I hear from a happy patient’s spouse or partner. Many patients have been in committed relationships for years and those happy relationships truly make it all worthwhile.”
