As we mentioned in the News, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has declared that Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White are “both male,” and are ineligible for the WNBA draft. Enes Kanter Freedom continued to insist that simply “identifying as female for the sake of basketball” was enough to be eligible for the WNBA. (Hint: it would be a good idea to identify as female for more than just a chance to join the league.) The declaration of ineligibility came in a letter to Repressentative Martin Stutzman, who used it to declare that decision was an “acknowledgement that simply identifying as a woman does not change basic human biology.” No, the decision only says that these particular individuals, who were referred to as individuals, did not identify as women enough. It did not make a blanket rejection of transgender women. For reading their overly-simple political views into a declaration that the individuals are only pretending to be transgender women, and for insisting that the vast majority of scientists don’t understand biology in its complexity, both Enes Kanter Freedom and Representative Martin Stutzman get TWITs. LGBTQ Nation has this story.
This week, the Bureau of Justice Statistics issued a report on transgender prisoners involved in acts of sexual violence. The reports did mention transgender women in prisons committing acts of sexual violence, especially against cisgender female prisoners, but failed to mention the many times when transgender female prisoners are victims of sexual violence by cisgender male prisoners. For deliberately skewing the data by mentioning one but not the other, the Bureau of Justice Statistics gets a TWIT. This story comes from The Advocate.
Florida Gubernatorial candidate Byron Daniels repeatedly misgendered a member of the audience who was pressing him on the subject of releasing the Epstein files. He defended himself by saying, “I’m listening to the voice, and I hear a sir.” Many cisgender women report being frequently misgendered over the phone, at least early in the conversation, so this is far from a good excuse, especially when one is corrected repeatedly. For continuing on with his political point after being told he was wrong, Byron Donalds gets a TWIT. The Advocate has this story.
Recently, for no particularly good and obvious reason, President Donald Trump hung on Dr. Annie Andrews, a candidate for U.S. Senate from South Carolina, the nickname “Tr**ny Annie Andrews.” This week, he repeated the nickname at another rally for Senator Darlene Graham Nordone. He also repeated his attacks on gender-confirmation surgery as “mutilizing” the body, with no particular details. For using a slur in place of evidence, and for deliberately using powerful and negative words to describe something he does not understand, President Trump gets a TWIT. This story comes from LGBTQ Nation.
Senator Ted Cruz was asked recently about so many close Senate races, many of which are in states which are typically Republican strongholds. He put the blame on “transgender witches.” For not recognizing that transgender people are not responsible for all the problems facing Republicans, and for not recognizing that voters just are not responding to anti-transgender rhetoric as Republicans think that they used to, Senator Ted Cruz gets a TWIT. LGBTQ Nation has this story.
In recent ads and at political rallies, Texas Republicans have stressed attacks on transgender people and our civil rights, rather than addressing economic issues or the war in Iran. Some conservative parents are complaining publicly now that the ads are making their children aware that transgender people exist. These parents were not planning on teaching their children about us at this time. For ignoring the easily foreseen consequence of these continued attacks on our civil rights, the Republicans using transgender issues in ads (especially U.S. Senate candidate Ken Paxton) get a TWIT. This story comes from Erin Reed at Erin In The Morning.
