This week, Meta’s review board approved anti-transgender videos, saying that they do not violate the company’s policy against hate speech. Meta’s AI was also seen recommending conversion therapy, which mental health experts say is ineffective and potentially harmful. For recommending a practice which is discouraged by experts, Meta gets a TWIT. The Advocate has this story.
As we mentioned in the news, Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a memo directing employees from the Justice Department to prosecute those who provide gender-affirming medical care to minors. In it, she compared gender-affirming surgery to “female genital mutilation,” which is often referred to as “female circumcision.” She also claims that the pharmaceutical industry is lying about the effectiveness of gender-affirming care, despite the fact that they used scientific standards to reach their conclusions about the effectiveness of the medications. For rejecting science in favour of what subjectively feels right to her biases, Attorney General Pam Bondi gets a TWIT. This story comes from The Advocate.
As we also mentioned in the news, the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled that a transgender minor, whose parents have given permission for a legal name change, must wait until he is 21 years old before he may change his name. According to the law as written, minors can get a legal name change if they have parental permission, yet the state Supreme Court ruled that a transgender child needs to be 21 to change his name. For insisting that a transgender child cannot change his legal name, even with parental permission, and for thereby insisting that the transgender child must be addressed at school by a name which does not match his gender identity, the Mississippi Supreme Court gets a TWIT. Erin In The Morning has this story.
Most serious journalists agree that there are few transgender athletes. Indeed, it is often said that transgender females are especially unlikely to want to participate in athletics. The president of the NCAA told Congress that there were fewer than ten transgender athletes in college sports. However, HeCheated.org and its predecessor, SheWon, count “900 medals” won by transgender athletes. Erin In The Morning investigated, and found dubious claims and downright lies in the data. For lying about a controversial subject, and for inventing data, HeCheated and SheWon get a TWIT. ?
As we also mentioned in the news, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that the federal government will cease its funding for the LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. For putting lives at risk because of a political disagreement over ethics, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gets a TWIT. The Advocate has this story.
