Olivia Hill, a transgender woman, won election to the Nashville Metro Council. She is the first transgender person to win an election in Tennessee. WZTV has this story.
We have told you of several school boards which rejected Virginia Governor Glenn Younkin’s guidelines for how to treat transgender students. Newsweek reports that the Amherst County Public School board voted 6-1 to reject the guidelines Amherst County is a Republican county.
The parents of transgender children have asked the entire Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals to review the decision not to issue a stay of Alabama’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. The law went into effect when a three-judge panel ruled it did not violate the constitution. This story comes from WSAF.
A federal judge in California has ruled that the California law which forbids teachers telling parents of their child’s change of gender in school violates the religious freedom of two Christian teachers. Reuters has this story.
A federal judge in Florida has ruled that the state’s law restricting gender-affirming medical care for adults can go into effect while it is being reviewed by the court. This story comes from The Hill.
Kelly Stough
Albert Weathers, a former pastor in Detroit, was sentenced to eight years in jail for the killing of Kelly Stough, a Black transgender woman. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and a felony fireams charge PinkNews has this story.
Milwaukee police have announced that they will not reveal a victim’s gender after a misgendering incident. This story comes from PinkNews.
A judge in Utah has granted the state permission to see the medical records of two transgender girls, who are fighting the state’s ban on transgender athletes. This will allow the state to see when they started receiving medical treatment and when they started puberty. The Salt Lake Tribune has this story.
Washington University in St. Louis has closed its Transgender Center. The University said that the new law prohibiting gender-affirming medical care for minors imposes “unacceptable” legal liability on the providers. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that parents are upset with the decision.
The House of Representatives is considering legislation which would deny federal funds to pay for gender-affirming medical care. This would include payments covered by Medicare, Medicaid, the Veterans Administration, and other medical programs that receive federal funds. This story comes from HealthAffairs.org.
Over 100 parents of transgender children have signed an open letter opposing the Kids Online Safety Act. One of the co-sponsors of the legislation said last week that the bill would thwart “the transgender in this culture.” The parents feel that comments like this show that the legislation is deeply flawed, and likely to be used for purposes other than what seems to be its goals. Bella Ramsey
Non-binary actor Bella Ramsey and transgender state Representative Zooey Zephyr are among those who made the Time 100 Next list, a list of “rising leaders in health, climate, business, sports, the arts and more.”
Republican presidential candidate and former Vice President Mike Pence answered a question at a town hall about transgender youth. He said that he respects decisions made by adults, but that he wants to protect minors from “decisions that will affect them for the balance of their lives.” The person who asked the question works with transgender youth, and took him to task for his answer. A transgender woman in American Samoa used the Civil Rights Act to win $125,000 in damages for discrimination at work. This story comes from LGBTQ Nation.
Jessica Watkins is a transgender woman who has been sentenced to prison for her role in the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. She has now been transferred from a men’s prison to a women’s prison. The Advocate wonders if some far-right politicians, with horrible records regarding transgender people, might have helped her to get transferred.
The state of California has ended its ban on state employees using state funds to travel to states which have anti-LGBTQ laws. Instead, they will contribute to the BRIDGE Project–Building and Reinforcing Inclusive, Diverse, Gender-Supportive Equality. The fund “could be used to create non-partisan, inclusive messaging, discourage discrimination, and help members of the LGBTQ+ community feel less isolated.” This story comes from LGBTQ Nation.
Many sources have reported a drop in both sales of Bud Light and the stock price of its parent company. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has bought about $96 million worth of shares of stock in Bud’s parent company. The Advocate has this story.

The producers of Married At First Sight told Heart Radio that they varied from their usual pattern for transgender bride Ella. They made sure that she was comfortable, and, with her permission, they informed her groom that he was marrying a transgender bride.
Taika Waititi’s new film Next Goal Wins concerns the American Samoa team at the FIFA World Cup. One of the characters is a fictional version of Jaiyah Saelua, a fa’afafine, or third gender, player for the real team. The Guardian reports that schools in Britain need guidance on how to handle transgender students. Perhaps British politicians need such guidance themselves.
The Media Council and the Broadcast Standards Authority looked into reports of biased stories regarding Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull, also known as Posie Parker. The New Zealand regulatory agencies ruled that calling her “anti-transgender” or a “trans-exclusionary speaker” is accurate, as is the statement that neo-Nazis “supported” her at her speeches. The Associated Press reports that a mausoleum for murdered transgender women has been opened in Mexico. Mexico has the second-highest number of murders of transgender women, surpassed only by Brazil.
