Bambie Thug

Bambie Thug, Ireland’s contestant in the Eurovision Song Contest, happens to be non-binary. They wore an outfit with the colors of the transgender pride flag as they performed in the semi-final competition last week. PinkNews has this story.

The Boy Scouts of America have announced that they will change their name to Scouting America. They have accepted girls as members for some time, although troops are either all boys or all girls. This story comes from Them.

The U.S. Department of Education has begun an investigation into the anti-transgender policies in two school districts in Texas. The Department of Education is acting on a complaint from Students Engaged in Advancing Texas, which complained about the Katy Independent School District. KPRC-TV has this story.

Milton Diamond, a noted sexologist who advocated for the rights of intersex people, has passed away at the age of 90. Diamond opposed the practice of surgical intervention on children born with ambiguous genitals to assign them a gender. This put him in conflict with Dr. John Money who put forth the theory that children are born gender neutral and “corrected” children would comfortably slide into the gender they were raised as. Diamond maintained that gender identity could not be forced. In the 1990s he tracked down the individual that Money used to “prove” his theory. It was not. Get the story from The New York Times.

Starr Brown

Starr Brown, a Black transgender woman, was shot and killed in Memphis. A coworker of hers has confessed to the crime, according to police. This story comes from The Advocate.

Kita Bee, a Black transgender woman, was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Kansas City. Some friends of hers believe that the incident was intentional. KSHB-TV has this story.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has signed into law a bill which requires teachers to tell their parents. Apparently, these legislators want the votes of the sorts of parents who would loudly object to their child changing genders at school. This story comes from WPLN=TV.

More than a dozen Republican-led states have signed on to a lawsuit against the new rule on Title IX which the Biden administration has announced. The Hill suggests that the conservative nature of many of the courts could affect the outcome of these lawsuits.

The Supreme Court now has a request to take up the case against Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors. They have not yet agreed to hear the case, nor have they agreed to not hear it. The 19th examines the Supreme Court’s history and apparent stances on gender-affirming medical care.

Rosemary Ketchum

Rosemary Ketchum is the first openly transgender person to win elective office in West Virginia. Ketchum was elected to the Wheeling City Council. Learn more from the AP.

Legislators in Mississippi have passed an anti-transgender bathroom bill. It now goes to the governor, who will likely sign it, according to The Advocate.

As several states pass their own version of anti-transgender bathroom bills, NPR notes that there are not as many boycotts and other punishments of the states as there were when North Carolina introduced the first such ban in 2016.

Western Carolina University has said it is looking into an incident in which a student known for her right-wing views confronted a transgender student in the women’s restroom. The right-wing student even posted video of herself confronting the transgender student. The Advocate has this story.

The political action organization MoveOn is organizing a Drag Queen Lobby Day in Washington, D.C. in June. Queens will fill the halls of Congress with the sound of their stiletto heels and directly confront Republican politicians who are attacking LGBTQ+ rights and equality. MoveOn needs to raise funds for the event. This link will take you to the donation page if you want to help pay the queens who will be coming from all over the country to confront the politicians who back anti-trans laws. 

Although the next U.S. Census is five-and-a-half years away, the Census Bureau is testing out some questions on gender identity and sexual orientation. This story comes from LGBTQ Nation.

Jin Xing

China’s first publicly recognized transgender dancer Jin Xing has remarried the love of her life whom she was forced to divorce 18 years ago. “Forced to divorce in 2006 for the children, we remarried after 18 years, witnessing our journey of love and responsibility,” Jin posted online. Planet Fitness said that it has seen a “fairly significant” decrease in its membership since the transgender incident. The New York Post has this story.

Target announced that Pride merchandise will not be sold at roughly half its stores, and there will be fewer items to choose from this year. Last year, there were significant protests of Pride items at Target. This story comes from Them

This next item is one that I for one was not expecting. J.K. Rowling was asked to tone down her transphobic social media posts by Elon Musk. The owner of X has been noted for his own transphobic posts, and admitted his views before asking her to post “interesting and positive content” instead of so much anti-transgender stuff. The NHS England plan for the treatment of transgender minors has leaked, and it appears that transgender children in England will be forced to detransition. PinkNews has this story.

NHS England is relying on the Cass Review as its scientific basis for reducing, if not eliminating, gender-affirming medical care for minors. Mother Jones published yet another review of the review, and they find, “It’s like the DeSantis administration wrote it.”

Dr. Hilary Cass herself appeared before Parliament. She said, among other things, that a ban on conversion therapy for transgender patients could “frighten off” therapists from working with young patients. But, medical therapists have abandoned conversion therapy. This story comes from PinkNews.

Nemo

Nonbinary singer Nemo won The Eurovision Song Contest and is Switzerland’s first Eurovision winner since Celine Dion in 1988. They won with The Code, a catchy track in which the nonbinary performer rapped and sang operatically about their journey to realizing their identity. Get the full story from Indian Express.

Thousands of protestors showed up to demonstrate their opposition to legislation which would bring back conversion therapy for transgender people in France. The protest was so large, it spread into Belgium. PinkNews has this story.

The highest court in the Czech Republic has ruled that making transgender people have sterilization surgery before they can change their legal gender is a “violation of human dignity.” Sterilization is no longer a necessary step in the process of changing legal gender. In New Zealand, an anti-trans protest by members of the fringe religion Destiny Church were met with so many opposing protestors that even their self-appointed bishop fled the protest–which he had organized. LGBTQ Nation has this story.
