NCTE Offers Medicare Benefits Guide For TGs
Transgender people on Medicare need to be aware that while sex reassignment surgery is not covered under Medicare medically necessary hormones are covered. But you and your doctor need to be aware of that and learn how to access the benefit.
To that end The National Center for Transgender Equality has produced a new resource that transgender beneficiaries and doctors need to see. The resource explains what is covered and how to navigate the appeal process if coverage is denied. The resource should be seen by both beneficiaries and their doctors. Often doctors are not aware of the most up to date Medicare rules and restrictions so the resource serves to educate them.
The resource was created as part of NCTE’s ongoing federal aging policy agenda and NCTE will continue advocating for sex reassignment surgery coverage in Medicare and ensure that transgender needs are fully addressed in all public health programs.
