Alana Nicole Sholar and Bobbie Thompson

The people we need to come along at the right time usually do. It’s no accident that the universe crossed my path with Alana Nicole Sholar and Bobbie Thompson when it did. This amazing couple has some of the most enriching nuggets of wisdom when it comes to the world of transgender. That’s probably because they have both lived their lives within it, in completely different ways.

We find ourselves — or I find my selves — embroiled in a messy century where we’re allowed to be ourselves but not exactly. As you have heard I’m starting to see pro-trans groups that are starting to look more like hate groups. So, it was a breath of fresh air when I was welcomed into the world (and minds) of both Alana and Bobbie.

I interviewed Alana Sholar on my radio show last year and we had a great time. Alana is transgender and has explored so many facets of her body and mind that you will find she’s an open book. Quite literally she is an open book as she wrote a book that covers many of the details! Alana’s story of gender discovery is titled “Hung in the Middle” and should be required reading for all humans.

When I called to interview Alana I was greeted first by Bobbie, Alana’s Spouse. I knew of Alana before as our paths have crossed a few times within this culture, but I had never really known much of Bobbie. I spoke with Bobbie just a little bit that day before Alana came to the phone and I could tell that she was just as open as her spouse. I could also tell she was probably just as interesting! One of the thoughts that crossed my mind was what a great idea it would be if Bobbie would one day write her story of gender discovery from the GG (genetic girl, aka cisgender) side of things.

It should come as no surprise that I of course was thrilled when I learned that this year Bobbie was releasing her own memoir talking about exactly that. Her book, “My Husband Looks Better in Lingerie Than I Do … Damnit”, covers her coming to terms with what transgender is and falling in love with Alana. It also covers a transition of her own — a transition of life. Bobbie started out like many people we know. She was a small town girl living a simple life of religion and normalcy. From that she traveled very far within her mind to arrive where she is now.

For the first show of my latest season on the radio I finally got to interview Bobbie and I was right, she’s just as great as Alana! Both have deep thoughts and the ability to take a step back in understanding a point of view. Where Bobbie & Alana are now is a place of pure fabulousness. They live in a small Kentucky town which they pretty much have been in for a lot of their lives. Alana lives life as she is, a fabulous transgender female, and Bobbie lives as she is, a fabulous person who loves her partner. To be out … you know OUT … in a small town and be accepted, loved and cared for is a breath of fresh air in a climate that often dictates the opposite. It gives me hope for everything as much as Bobbie & Alana’s books did.

Both books (much like both people) come to us in a time where so many are feeling very burdened by the heavy media negativity and the idiocy of some very in-the-box people. I urge you to read both “Hung in the Middle” and “My Husband Looks Better…” as it will calm your nerves as well as educate. There is something in these people’s lives that they can pass along to us, no matter what stage you may be at in your own life (i.e. cosmic, spiritual, gender, political, etc.).

There is a golden opportunity within these memoirs to not only see through the eyes of a transgender person but also a person who is not transgender and is part of the community. These are points of view without labels, judgment or any real care of fitting in. These people are just being people and that’s really all they need to be. I think this is all astoundingly important because if there’s one thing I see it’s that people are forgetting that at the end of the day they are just people. Plain and simple, we’re just people.
