Boho Chic Is My Style
I love taking those fashion quizzes to find out what my style is and invariably the results are consistent. Born in the ’40s and coming of age in the ’50s, my preferred style tends to be “classic,” but running a close second is the Bohemian style. Why? Maybe because I’m a Bohunk. Those of you in Chicago may know the term. Bohunk is to Bohemian as Tranny is to Transvestite. Not a very nice term.
The Bohemian style came of age in the late 60s and early ’70s, but took off in 2004 and was made famous by Sienna Miller. Kate Moss and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. When you think Bohemian, think of the gypsies of eastern Europe….flowing shirts, layered tops, floppy hats. loads of jewelry, shoes from flats to gladiator sandals and in general loose flowing clothing…the 60s hippies with that independent, free-spirited frame of mind.
What’s the attraction for me…I guess living in Mexico where you see the many beautiful costumes of the Mayans, but beyond that, it’s hot. A flowing skirt, especially knee length, is very feminine, while the maxi, especially in a bright Aztec print, will always catch your attention. And I love jewelry . . . just call me the “bling gal.” The loose fitting clothing with the wind blowing around and up your skirt is indeed cooling. A floppy hat with large sunglasses competes the look and gives you that carefree, tropical look that you see on all those cruise line advertisements.
Of course for today’s fashions, we need to take that ’60s look and update it to Boho chic, glamorous and sophisticated.
The Boho Chic Look
Clothes — Boho is all about looking individual and natural. Earthy tones are best, with splashes of colors that highlight your natural coloration. Skirts and flowy shirts are good, but they shouldn’t be baggy. Look for tops with beading, embroidery, floral prints, crochet details and super-trendy butterflies
Shoes — Cute, casual sandals are the preferred style in all their colors and variations, but boots are okay too
Hair — It should appear natural. Naturally curly hair is good, or even a wavy texture will look great. Braids and afros are also very Boho.
Accessories — Boho chic is synonymous with “accessories galore.” This means plenty of bracelets, ankle bracelets, mix-and-match necklaces, and dangling earrings. But don’t forget headbands, clips, and barrettes for your hair, and belts for your waist. The possibilities are endless. Just make sure they’re a noticeable part of your wardrobe.
Wear wide brimmed hats. They will accent your style and make your skin look better too.
Makeup — The idea is to look natural without looking washed-out. This short video will show you how to achieve the look
