Boystown in Chicago is one of the most country’s inclusive LGBTQ+ communities and the oldest officially recognized gay neighborhood in the country. It’s known for its welcoming vibe, nonstop nightlife, LGBTQ-owned businesses, and excellent dining options. Covid-19 put a damper on that nightlife and Julie Slowinski, a normally enthusiastic patron of the area’s offerings, was reluctant to return to her usual haunts over concerns about the lack of social distancing. Last weekend she decided it was time and returned to Boystown. Triumphantly.

COVID-19 regulations made it hard for Julie to have any fun in the Windy City last year. The rule banning indoor dining at restaurants was particularly hard on her and her friends as an evening out after a day of shopping was most often a test of how well the ladies tolerated the cold. In 2017 a newbie to the world of crossdressing had six crossdressed forays in a short period of time. With nightclubs and bars being closed, and for a time, department stores and other suppliers of femme finery limited to online ordering, it seemed that there was no fun to be had for the girls. On June 14 in Chicago there was a protest march called Drag March. It brought together drag queens, kings, and everything in between as they lead a peaceful (non-violent) protest march in support of Black Lives Matter. One of those attending the march and showing her support for the cause was our crossdresser correspondent from Chicago, Miss Julie Slowinski.
Given our Chicago correspondent’s home situation isolating at home has meant no feminine activities. She hasn’t put on makeup in three months and she fears that when she is finally able to paint and primp she may have forgotten how it’s done. To fight that feeling Julie has written her blog on her beautification process. If she can remember all the steps after three months she will stop worrying about losing the knowledge. Living in the 21st century we are now able to use the internet to learn things, communicate with others and even set up musical jam sessions with players located at many different places. This wonderful technology is even more useful and important during the current pandemic. That said, some of the social networking that goes on seems to be more “anti-social.” Rather than unite the transgender community platforms like Facebook seem to be doing more to divide us. Julie Slowinski volunteered to be the dollar girl at a drag show, during Pinkfest. That’s the assistant who gathers the dollar bills fans of the drag queens toss on stage. Once she got a taste of showbiz and being on stage she was hooked. She decided she’d participate in a drag show. The only problem? She didn’t dance. So she took a beginning class in burlesque thinking she would learn how to dance. That lead her into doing a burlesque routine on stage in front of a big crowd.
