Since I could remember we were told that you could not wear white after Labor Day so one year I decided to look it up because when asked most people do not know “why” and if it is still proper to wear white after Labor Day in current times. Now I could just give you the answer and spare you an informative article but you’re here to read — so lets get started.

My View on the Topic and Summary of Research

After researching this for myself I found out some things explaining the “why,” so I will summarize the research in this portion as well as give some examples.

The wearing of white from Memorial Day to Labor Day, in short, was the time of year when the bad weather in the snowy north was pretty much over. Also the rule comes from a time when transportation was not like it is today.

Because of the winter period in which the north could get snow into late March and rain in most of April, then by the end of May everything was pretty much dry and not as wet we knew the heat was on its way! So it was time to put on your white to end the short pastel season around Easter.

One would certainly not wish to dirty one's white dress in the winter.

One would certainly not wish to dirty one’s white dress in the winter.

Now this four months of white normally ended around the first week of September, which is also in the harvest season as well a time when temperatures were also starting to cool down, so people tended to switch to darker colors and heavier clothes. Think of it like this, we as women, used to — and were required in some businesses and even religious institutions — to always be in hose when wearing a skirt. (If the establishment even allowed women to wear pants/slacks.) Women in the workplace were not allowed to wear sandals or any open toe shoes. So using that, ladies we know hose are hot during the hot summer months so when we can we are quick to take them off, and we also enjoy sandals in the summer to keep our feet cool. Now for those who are reading saying “I would never not wear hose as a woman,” let me clue you in on this. I was just like that and one year no matter what type of hose I wore I would find myself getting super hot and I did not have on any of my figure shaping or a suit! Then one day I decided to take my panty hose off and I cooled down — and from that point I only wear them when I am in my business mode. And base whether I will wear them on the high temperature of the day.

So, wearing white was considered cooler and the clothing of the summer months was made to be cooler so people tended to only wear white during the summer.

Can You Were White Now After Labor Day?

To be honest I would say no because it is an old rule that many still cherish. However I will say there are other shades of white you can wear after Labor Day that are perfectly acceptable by everyone. Look for a shade that is more of a cream color or off white and those are perfectly fine. Now, at some churches, on first Sunday the mothers will wear white and sometimes it is Winter White and at other times it is pure white and that is pretty much the only time white is proper and can be worn after Labor Day — unless you’re getting married!

So would I personally wear white after Labor Day? My answer is no! However if another person is wearing white go for it! Rules can be broken even those that no one understands fully.
