Twit Awards for the Week 2/20/23
As we mentioned in the news, almost 200 contributors to The New York Times signed onto an open letter, criticizing the paper for its coverage of transgender issues. The paper responded by criticizing its contributors for signing that letter. The next day also saw a new opinion piece by Pamela Paul, entitled, “In Defense of J.K. Rowling.” The piece agreed with her views of transgender rights, and it did not sit beside an opposing view. It should be pointed out that the piece was by a columnist, whose contract allows her to choose her own topics. Even so, the lack of an opposing view was startling. For failing to recognize the fault in their reporting, even when it is pointed out, and for failing to provide any attempt at a “both sides” argument against someone who was clearly supporting the suppression of a class of people’s human rights, The New York Times gets a TWIT. We also mentioned in the news the murder of Brianna Ghey, who was stabbed to death by a pair of 15-year-olds in Britain Because she was too young to change her legal gender, she will be listed by her deadname and her birth sex on her death certificate. Moreover, The Times of London deadnamed her in its coverage of her murder. For unnecessary roughness, The Times of London and Sky News (both owned by Rupert Murdoch) gets a TWIT. Gwendolyn Herzig, a pharmacist who happens to be transgender, was testifying on a bill in Arkansas which would ban gender-affirming medical care for minors. During questioning, state Senator Matt McKee asked her, “Do you have a penis?” For prying into the witnesses’ personal life unnecessarily, and for pretending to have a right to know that sort of personal information, state Senator Matt McKee gets a TWIT. NBC News has this story.
Last year was a record-breaker for anti-LGBTQ bills. This year, it did not take even to the middle of February for the number of anti-LGBTQ bills filed to surpass the number filed last year; that happened on February 13. These include nearly 100 bills which aim to ban gender-affirming care, almost 40 bans on transgender participation in sports, 27 bans on drag shows, and a dozen attempts to make it more difficult or impossible to change legal gender. For the promotion of discrimination, the people behind these bills get a TWIT. This story comes from The Advocate Channel.
